Wound seperation.... Please help and encouage!

Wound seperation.... Please help and encouage!

Postby rn2413 » Sun Mar 21, 2010 7:33 am

I had BL on feb 24th 2010. I am now 3 weeks post and between 2-3 weeks post op my breast wounds have decided to seperate at the T junction. One is prob 2 inch by 3 inch and the other is prob 3 inch by 4 inch. My PS says it will heal on its own but take a lot longer. This is a lot of pain and trying to go on with everday life hurts so bad without pain meds. The first 2 weeks were smooth sailing without much pain. but now I feel like I am dying. My PS has informed me to do wet dressing change 3-4 times a day. They are still opening up even bigger as we speak. Has anyone else had this to happen. I will post pics and show someone if they have pics to share with me. I guess I am just wanting reassurance that there is a end in site and I would like to see if anyone on here has any pics they could share if this has happened to them. I would like the hear a realistic time frame for healing and see an outcome that others have experienced.

I am in the same boat as you. It's been so hard and so scary even though my doc says I'll be fine. I go in once a week so that he can pull sutures out. Every time he does that, it opens up my wounds and i have to reheal. My right breast seems to be completely healed underneath, but my left breast is having a hard time. I am 6 weeks out and honestly I just started taking pictures of my wounds to see if it's getting better or worse, so I don't know if I'm better now than I was a week ago.
I know there are a few other ladies on here who had incisions open up and are healed now. Unfortunately for us and it just takes more time. My best advice is to relax as much as possible. No heavy lifting and moving arms around a lot. Eat healthy whole foods for good nutrition and get plenty of sleep. And of course...do exactly as your dr says. This will get better eventually.
I'm sorry that you're going through this. I can totally relate. Keep us posted on your progress.

Thanks for your reply. As I check more and more into it, I see that there are a lot of women going through this also. Would you care to share pics with me? My are getting worse as I type literally. I am also trying to take vitamin c and E by mouth to help aid in healing. What are you putting on your open wounds? I am going also once a week in order for him to keep pulling out sutures as well.

Barbie, thank you for posting the picture. I have not had my surgery yet, but I'm trying to mentally prepare for it. I know it's going to be important to be realistic about things not going as smoothly as I'm hoping/praying for. I really appreciate that people are willing to put this information out there. I wanted to find out if anyone knows why this happens. Is it an allergic reaction to the sutures? I'm worried because I have very sensitive skin & get all kinds of allergies (rashes from certain lotions, can't wear any jewelry that's not gold/sterling sliver, etc.) I have a 2nd consultation scheduled with the PS I think I'm going with so I'll add it to my list of questions, but if anyone knows more I'd appreciate all the information I can get. Thanks & hope you all heal soon.

Wow!
That is really encouraging to see. That's pretty much what things look like on me, except underneath. It looks like you healed very quickly from week to week. Did you have to put anything over your incision that pulled it together or did the skin just grow back together on its own?
I am mortified by all of this and I'm ready to move on with my life. I have young children who need me. 6 weeks of not being able to pick them up and be there for them the way I need to is doing some emotional damage. 6 weeks ago, I was on top of the world...happier than ever. I can't believe I am at this place right now. I never imagined it!
It is definitley encouraging to see you progress and to know that no matter how long it takes we will ALL eventually heal.
Thanks so much.

Thanks Barbie you have helped reassure me a lot. The yellow gauze is xeroform. My PS has has me use adaptic and xeroform and too see which one I liked better. I have also used a petroleoum based gauze as well. The yellow xeroform has been my most comforting. I am changing them 3 times a day. Please do find me more pics. I am really needing the reassurance right now. I am 3-4 weeks post op and they keep on opening up. 3 months would be a realistic time for me. I just hope to see an end soon. Please keep me posted on what all you find out. Those last pics were taken friday and they have opened up worse in the last 2 days.

I am also having this problem although it is not severe. My openings are only about the size of a dime on both sides but one side looks like it MAY be getting bigger. It's hard to tell. It started for me at 3 weeks and I am now 4 weeks post op. I have been instructed to do keep moist with polysporin, cover with gauze, change frequently, and monitor. I have no smell what-so-ever and there is no signs of infection at all.

How long do the openings continue to get bigger before they start to heal? I have been doing to moist dressings for 5 days now and where it looked like pink tissue underneath before it looks like it is starting to get what looks like the stuff that when left dry would form a scab. I just really don't want them to get any bigger.

Barbie, I couldn't see your pics it asked for a password. How long did it take for yours to heal?

I am at 4 weeks post op today and mine got bigger from 2 weeks til 3 and 1/2 weeks so far. I have had no new opening since sunday and I hope mine has stopped. They are a little worse than the pics I have on here right now. Hopefully I am finished opening and will start to heal. Did you see my pics?

Yes, I saw your pics and it scared me. It looks so painful and I don't want mine to spread anymore. One side looks like it actually might be healing and getting a little smaller but the other side is getting slightly wider and I mean very slightly. I hope that yours begins to heal soon. I had no indication of this until one day last week at 3 weeks P/O. I had always had scabs and some oozing from the T junction but then one day I looked and the scab was gone and replaced by a seperation and then a couple days later the other side did the same thing. I have had a couple stitches come out of those areas as well. I

Just an update!!!

I am now 6.5 weeks post op. My opening stopped getting any bigger at about 3 1/2- 4 weeks post op and between 5 1/2 to 6 I started seeing healing and some closure starting. Minimal at first but now my left breast has taken off closing. I have updated my photos. If you do not already have my pw you can pm me to get it. But please beware they are very bad. One side got to a 3 1/2 in by 3 in (right) and the other 3 in by 2 1/2 in (Left). I am very excited to see such improvement. My doc has me using either xeroform or adaptic dressings, change them 3 times a day and aquaphor. Who would have thought that a mm of change would brighten someones day so much. Thanks for all the encouragement through this.

Hi thanks for posting this information. I had BA & BL on March 25th so I am a little over 2 weeks post op. LAst week noticed leaking of fluid and blood from the inciscision T on my left breast and it had a horrible odor. I went to see my PS who is over 3 hrs away and he said I had a stitch that wanted to come out and was a superficial infection. He pulled the stitch out and put a bandaid on it and said to leave it on for the rest of the day. I did but when I took it off there was a big hole there where the vertical incision meets the anchor under the breast. It still leaks a thick fluid but the smell is gone. is this hole going to heal on it's own? I mean it just doesn't look normal at all. It bugs me that it's completely open and has such a heavy implant pressing down on it. i was put on Keflex right away and I am sure the infection is gone, however, it 's so sore. I can barely do anything or I get terribly sore.

Please tell me this will heal!

I know your pain all too well. I came to this message board hoping to other pictures when mine happened and to see that it would be ok and I succeeded in just that. I found others on here like me as well. My pictures are very very very bad. I started with just a small opening also. My body rejected almost all my internal sutures and so I split open for those to come out. Over the course of a couple weeks we would remove suture after suture. This complication usually happens around 3 weeks post op. Mine started about 2 weeks and was at it worse by 4 weeks. My ps now has me putting a wet to dry dressing on it and changeing it 3 times a day. This has been wonderful. My ps did not tell me this when I first called and told him it was opening so I had the dress dressing only and it got to an unbearable point when I would remove them. So I wish he would have told me that if this happened to put a wet dressing on it. So aslways ask your ps what to do before you do anything. The answer to your question is that it will heal which I am still learning myself but maybe not by itself. Some people which I have learned from here close right up and others open bigger before they close. It will all depend on your body. I am 6 1/2 weeks post op right now and seeing major improvement and it is increaseingly better by the minute now but I still have a very long road. Both of mine are split open at the T junction. The right got to 3 x 3 1/2 and the left was 3x 2 1/2. I don't know if you would want to see my pictures because I would not want you getting scared but the latest ones show a lot of progression. I really hope this helps you.

Thank you so much. I wouldn't mind seeing the pictures. I will post mine. It's just the left breast but it's so damn painful! I can see mine closing up from the inside but the outside seems to be seperating to a bigger hole. Glad to know it heals. I wonder how bad of scarring we are going to have?
