Size Difference after Breast Reduction

Size Difference after Breast Reduction

Postby Eileene » Sat Aug 14, 2010 10:21 am

I am 5 1/2 weeks out from breast reduction surgery and am concerned about having 2 different size breasts after healing is completed. I have been larger on the left since the day of surgery but was naturally larger on the right before. I keep trying to convince myself that it is swelling but that is getting harder to do by the week. I remain consistently at least a half size larger on my left side. When I mentioned it to my PS he just said that there was too many changes going to occur to make any judgements at this time.
I was a 38 DDD++ and now my best guess is a 36 D on the left and 36 C+ on the right. I had 1012gms removed on the left and 1170 gms removed on the right. That is around 4.8 lbs altogether. I am not sure of my size now because I am still wearing a compression garment. The left inframmary incision is about 3 cm longer than the right which makes me believe my observation is correct. The areola area is very uneven from R to L also.

I had pain initaily after surgery but it subsided quickly and I went back to work 4 days after. I am a business manager and my job does not require very physical work. I have recently (weeks 4-5) started to have increased pain again around my areola and inframmary incisions again, is this normal? I am beginning to feel really blue over all this. I have been trying to focus on the fact that my back pain is gone but I still wanted a great aesthetic result. Is that unreasonable? I have been taking photos to encourage myself that I am healing evenly but they have shown me otherwise. Has anybody else had these issues?

Pain in incisions is normal at the stage you are at. It is probably the nerve endings healing. It is also normal to feel blue. This is major surgery and you've had a lot of drugs pumped into you. Your body has been changed for the better, but still, you need time to adjust to the new you. I agree with your PS, 5 1/2 weeks is way too soon to think you're looking at a final outcome. We've just got to tell ourselves we aren't going to make any judgement calls until at least 6 months. I was told upfront that I would probably need a revison surgery. I'm not quite 4 months out now and the left breast is at least one full size larger than the right. I'll worry about that when October comes. The only thing I'd ask him now is what your responsiblity is for a revision surgery. It's common the patient covers the anaesthetic but the doctor waves his fee on the second surgery. I hope this helps.

I am only 9 days post op and my left breast is noticeably bigger than the right one, as it was before surgery, too. I have been telling myself not to come to any conclusions this early, but at my first follow up visit, my PS seemed to think that the size difference would probably remain, even after all the swelling is gone. I dread the thought of more surgery. Is revision surgery as big a deal as the initial surgery?

I guess I wonder when you knew you would needed a revision and was this something that was discussed preop? I heard a lot of conversation about shape evolving and changing over the course of 6 months but I never heard anything about a size difference. I have a sister and good friend who had the surgery and they never had a concern during the healing process that they were 2 different sizes. The difference in my breasts before surgery, I could not even detect in a mirror, one just filled my bra a little fuller but now that is the smaller breast. How could that happen. I thought the size was verified while still under anesthesia.

The thought of having my life interrupted again for more surgery is just about unthinkable to me. I am a very active person and not doing all that I usually do and participate in has been adding to my very blue feeling. I still walk 3-4 miles a day and that helps but I am out of the game for tennis swimming in the lake(my PS said absolutely not) kayaking waterskiing etc .oh, and sleeping on my stomach!. I sit around watching my family and thinking of how a very thoughtful decision maker has gotten herself into this fix. It seems it would all feel better to me if I thought I had a good result. To make it worse, my PS is dismissive when I express my concerns.

What is involved in a revision surgery, is it the same recovery time? How are the breasts evened up. The smaller one is smaller than we discussed preop and that I wanted, now do I have to think about just being smaller than I asked for?

I feel like I am on a slippery slope and I don't know where to turn. Thanks for listening.....

revisions can be done in different ways. It can be done in the OR as another BR or sometimes in the office. I do know of one person who had a revision on just one for the same complaint. It was done on in the office under local. But you need to wait at least 6 months for healing before it can be done. At each post op visit be sure to bring it up so they have it on record that this is a major concern for you.

Thanks for the response on what you know about revision. I have registered my concern at each visit (1 week and 3 weeks) and my PS indignently states he does surgery that looks good in 6 months, not now. He even left the room to get his nurse to listen to my concern which he had me state a second time. His behavior made me think even more that he also sees something not quite right . I am a nurse my self and am a little surprised at his response. My husband went to my last postop and is planning to go to my next to validate my observations. At my second visit he said he wanted to leave the room but his nurse wasn't there today. My husband is an aesthetic dentist and talks to patients all day long about their conserns and is also surprised at my PS behavior. It doesn't fill me with a sense of confidence even though I used the "nurses network" to choose him. The day of my surgery I was the last case and it started very late (12-2) in a stand alone surgical center. It went just under 2 hours and I was in my daughter's car 45 min after I hit the recovery room. They had me walk out as I left the bathroom without my shoes on. The staff needed to leave. I keep thinking there was maybe not enough time to insure an even outcome! I did have a lot of tissue removed. It took me 10 years to finally decide to do it! I am still hoping for an even outcome. I would post pics if I could figure out how to do it.

Wow! I am a nurse also and I bet you thought all this was strange. The leaving thing is very odd. If your surgery was scheduled for that time then staff should have been scheduled for you to fully recover. I would get a copy of your op note also. Lets hope that some of this is swelling.

I am always amazed when people tell me they left so soon. My surgery was at 7:45 AM, my husband got called by the Dr at 10:45 that she was done, I was wheeled to my room (I stayed over) at about 3, and i don't remember anything prior to that! I had a Dilaudid PCA but it wasn't started until I was in my room so i was awake for that.
