Question about Neosporin

Question about Neosporin

Postby daviskimdavis » Sun Feb 10, 2008 6:09 pm

I have seen posts in this forum that say 'use Neosporin' and others that say 'do not use Neosporin'. Which is correct? To those who say not to use it...why not? I have also seen suggestions that people use Preparation H.

What do you suggest using after a peel. I ordered Emu oil with my 12.5% TCA. Should I use another product along with the Emu oil?

Thanks

Emu oil should be fine. I also used Aquaphor, which is good. Hmmm not sure why no on the Neosporin. I used it once immediatly post peel mixed in with my Aquaphor to stave off any possible infection. Wish I could be of more help there!

Best of Luck to you!

The reason why some people say "no" to neosporin is because many have had negative reactions to it. There have been posts on this board submitted by people whose experience with using it was awful. Others have not had a problem with it.

I say NO NEOSPORIN!!! It says right on the label not to use it for more than 7 days. When I had a mole removed the nurse said lots of people are allergic to the zinc in it. My doc said not to use anything on my boobs after my breast reduction so I went out and bought a giant tube of neosporin and slathered it all over the scars everyday. Within a week I had the worst rash with redness and itchiness--it was awful. So I went to my gp since I was too mortified to go back to the ps. She said so many people react to neosporin she doesn't know why they sell it. then one woman on this board used it after her peel and her face was super splotchy and irritated and she wasn't sure if it was the peel or the neopsprin being used on such raw skin.

So bottom line--I use neosporin all the time on little cuts or scraps, but NOT for more than a few days and NOT on just peeled skin. Prolonged use or use on too new skin can cause a terrible rash even if you've never had a reaction to it before. Just my 2 cents.

Postby koseryasmine » Tue Feb 12, 2008 5:59 pm

i have acne and acne scars... i use benzoyl peroxide and it actually keeps my face free of acne breakouts....im doing the tca peel every once in a while to fade away my acne scars....it takes a few days for the peel to shed and when i stop using the benzoyl peroxide i get a few breakouts which take forever to go away...now my question is..can i put on benzoyl peroxide on my skin after the tca peel or is that a no no..i mean its an exfoliator all together...i tried it the other day after my peel and my skin didnt react to it in a neg way..but i mean if i put it on would it really make my skin come out worse or have an effect on how my skin improves?

I dont know how helpful this will be but I started back on my BP 2.5% right after all the peeling stopped with no negative reaction. Maybe you can try it once, wait a day, and if no reaction by all means proceed. Peels tend to make me purge which to me is a good thing, I just dont like the look or feel of it  and I normally only use my BP in the am at first then slowly go to twice a day if my skin is receptive and handling it okay.

Best of luck to you. BP has REALLY helped my acne prone skin so I know how you feel!

Neosporin allergy can leave scars

Postby suzy222 » Sat Feb 16, 2008 12:03 pm

I found out I was allergic to Neosporin by slathering it over a cut on my knee and bandaging it. The skin blew up in a vicious red rash that took 18 months to clear and left scars behind. Never use it on your face.

Ok, I guess I found the answer to why I have scars on my face after getting the 25% TCA peel...The asthetician told me to follow her directions i.e. put neosporin on the new skin and put moisturizer on the skin which hasn't peeled yet...

I followed her directions, bought neosporin. For a second opinion, I asked the Pharmasist, he told me not to use neosporin on the new skin as it would irritate.... but as the asthetician told me, I slathered neosporin on my skin it irritated the hell outta my skin; it was red as hell...people at my work were going Ewwwww and Aouchhh!

I guess my skin is also allergic to zinc found in neosporin...

Now I'm looking for a new dermatologist for another peel because I have nothing but scars on my face and hands =(

I've warned here several times of using Neosporin prophylactically--all of these are good examples and reasons not to use it UNLESS directed by your physician and if infection is present.

Hopefully reading responses from those who've had some side effects will help warn others.

Neosporin

Postby MsTammy » Sat Mar 29, 2008 5:14 pm

:D I love this stuff. I am 39 and have used it since I was a child. Used to get infantago and it always worked and kept it from spreading. Its like a wonder med for me. I think its great on the face open pimples, scrapes, burns etc... I have read about peoples bad reactions could be allergic(?
Try it on a small spot first then use it if it works ok. I am now using it on my glycolic peel and seems to be helping.

There is actually a chemical in the Neosporin that can cause some people sensitivity/reaction. It sent one person here to the ER and took quite a while to recover (her skin), because she reacted so strongly to the Neosporin. It's a cumulative effect, from what I can tell, so a spot test may not work for everyone.

If your doctor directs you to use it, then follow his/her directions. But, if you begin to have increased redness (irritation), it might be good to let him/her know.

Neosporin is not a bad thing, and does work well in the short term on scrapes, burns, etc. But using it for an extended period of time, or when it's not even needed, is not a good thing (when it comes to post-peel or post-laser).
