Dental Care Tijuana- Bad experience

Postby ovi@vancouver » Wed Apr 04, 2012 9:15 pm

Here is my story about Dental Care Tijuana: I know Sergio Penunuri since 2007. His main problem is dishonesty. I have done eight crowns and five implants but for a bridge and a crown I had to come back another three times since his skills on taking impressions are questionable. I had to fly from Seattle each time he re-cemented but the tooth fell in few days again. Last week I told him about his poor workmanship. I have to mention that each trip back and forth cost me at least $600. The last crown he made on my canine tooth, was10 mm longer, than the rest of the teeth and for that reason when I ate, my tooth broke. He never admits, that he had done something wrong but he enjoyed when things are getting worse, since he knew he was going to make more money.
He told me that I need a root canal (he lied!) and that it was going to cost me another $200. I replied that I am sure that broken tooth already had a root canal, done in 2005, and that if he was not sure, he could check the x-rays. He said he already did and called the endondontics specialist and she will be there in 20 minutes. I ran to the closest dental clinic, which was Dent-Art Center. I explained that I needed a second opinion since I was suggested to have a root canal. Dr. Lugo was very friendly and helpful, he took a panoramic x-ray and confirmed me that my tooth could have a root canal( in less than 10 minutes). From that moment I knew that I am dealing with an unscrupulous man. I returned and told Sergio that I do have a root canal because I checked with another doctor. He was very angry and maintained that I needed a root canal in front of the endondontics specialist Dr. Diana Lizarara. He asked her in Spanish to tell me same thing , which she refused. She told me that I only need a preparation for a post, which will costs me $70. I was crazy …so crazy to blindly trust him and not get him checked by another dentist for such a long time. Last Saturday, I paid him $1150 for three crowns hoping that Saturday evening I will leave and never return. He cemented two of the crowns(one he grinded it down to the metal) and the third one he said it didn’t fit well and I should leave and return next time. I said, “no, I want everything done now, these two days off from work the plane fares plus hotel cost $1200 – for me and my wife. That is enough, will not come a second time and I will stay until Monday to have the damaged crown fixed and the other crown cemented. He said if I come back he will do for me a bridge free of charge. I replied:” I paid you to do three good crowns, so far you did only one, I don’t need any freebies from you, just do what I paid you to do.” I did stay until Monday (bad mistake) hoping that the damaged crown would be replaced, instead he offered to quick fix it with some white paint. I couldn’t believe my eyes when he actually painted the crown. I had to re-purchase another ticket for me and my wife and Monday he didn’t fix the tooth he damaged.
The thing that hurts me most is that I paid him to replace metal fillings for my wife(which recovered from cancer, a year ago) with onlays and did such a bad job – leaving cracks between sealant and composite which did develop into a tooth infection. His greed, dishonesty and incompetence was proven when he assured me that everything is fine, just a little discomfort. He didn’t want to replace the onlays he did for my wife, asking me to come another time. I had to pay another doctor to remove the work he done. I have recorded him on my phone and took pictures of the work he has done. On the video he admits that he was wrong about root canal and bad crowns like they were “little accidents”. No reimbursement for the bad job he has done.
In conclusion do not go to this guy. If you already have gone to him make sure you check with another doctor everything he has done to your teeth before it is too late. If you need more info or advice call me at (360)871-7219. I hope that nobody makes the same mistake, I did.

You were right ....the three crowns he did without matching the color are very crowded with not enough space for flossing. I have to let him know about this, also.

I quited going to Dental Care Tijuana. I bet, the people that are posted on his website are not real. He refused to fix my crowns saying that, they look OK. He tried to catch me with a "good deal'' wich didn't work on me. Most of the people that went there when I was last time, were from Tijuana. At least I didn't spend more than US$1000. It is a closed chapter for me. I was recommended another doctor and I talked to few customers about their experience. "Affordable Clinic", but the work is not guarateed.

My wife also is a victim of Dr Penunuri. She now has a mouth full of ill-fitting crowns and bridges that has become one of the worst dental nightmares I've ever seen. Tooth pain and headaches are impossible to bear on a daily basis. Open margins leading to decay. And this is not the opinion of me, a layman. This is the opinion of my American dentist, who has referred me to a different Mexican dentist.

Dr. Penunuri begged and pleaded for a second chance to fix things, promising to pay our airfare if we came for corrective work. Of course, the story changed after we got there to it being a cosmetic repair for which airfare reimbursement was inappropriate. Still, he attempted to repair the issues with, without a single repair resulting in improvement. Of 15 or so teeth that were crowned or bridged by Dr. Penunuri, there was only one or two that seem acceptable. That means they haven't fallen out, yet.

Sorry to hear your bad experience enough666, I hope that you are OK and your wife as my wife have to redo most of "doctor" Pennuri somewhere else... It is no way that this "doctor" is able to fix something he has done...Imagine how many times he begged me to come back to fix things in all these years since December 2007.. I was ultimately who lost time and money. Because I was always starting a new dental work that will lead me to another disappointment. The thing that hurt me the most was the way he did onlays (5-five) for my wife. We wanted to replace metal fillings after she was done with chemotherapy. Every one of the five was improper done with cracks between sealant and porcelain, where decay and infection started. He asked us to come back to fix after 4 months. When we show-up he had a nervous break-down or something he didn't want to admit that he has done something wrong and all he has done for my wife he extracted for free one of the teeth that were infected and said that we have to come back some other time when she heals to fix the other teeth.
This guy knew what my wife went through and any infections could be life threatening for her immune system already down but showed no remorse. As soon as we arrived back in States we seen two doctors that treated her infection and redo the fillings. She is OK now I am still not replaced all my crowns(it might take some time) but at least I don't live the nightmare of seeing that "doctor" again.
I hope also that no one who reads our experiences will try-out his skills. I challenge any of his happy patients (if there is any!) to let us know what he is happy for...

A last update about dr. Penunuri......work
Three of the implants got a bad infection (left side) because he was to lazy to do a bone graft, he put the implants into the sinus. I got so much pains and the last two crowns(right side) are moving badly on the implants-looks that they unscrewed with the abutment and crown by themself. This two crowns were the last done by this individual. Nothing that that guy did is OK so far... He is counting that people will come back to him to fix the thinngs he have done and catch them with something else...I want to sue him in California's court if is possible I know he has a house in Chula Vista, California. He is a disgrace to whole dental community. I can't believe that only few people came forward, I am sure by the way he worked are a lot more unhappy customers. He posts about himself on his side, I quote:" He(himself) is recognized as a leader in dental community, and is consistently chosen by independent surveys as a top dentist in entire Mexico." No comments....

My name is Jaslene White and I´m from Bell Gardens, CA. I´ve been treating my teeth with Dr. Sergio Peñuñuri for the past year and a half, and I´ve had the BEST EXPERIENCE in my life. You see, its hard for me to trust Doctors in general, especially dentists because my 1st visit at the age of 5 was horrifying, but that has changed since i started treatment with Dr. Peñuñuri. He is a very efficient dentist. For the past year and a half, I´ve had gotten done 2 root canals, 4 crowns, 5 implants and 2 more implants that i still need to get done. I´m not the only one getting treatment from Dr. Peñuñuri, almost my entire family has been getting treatment aswell. Til today, none of us have had problems with crowns breaking, infections, or any othe kind of issues with the procedures that we´ve had with Dr. Peñuñuri. My husband has been getting treatment for the past 6 months and he is getting much more work done than the rest of us, and he´s been feeling great. My last visit to Dr. Peñuñuri´s office was 2 weeks ago when i got my last 2 implants done. The wierdest thing is that we tent to eat lots of hard foods like: gum, hard candy, carrots, licorice, jelly beans, gummy bears and more, and we haven´t had none of our crowns or implants break or fall out. Once you meet Dr. Peñuñuri and you are in his office, as soon as he starts to explain the procedures, he makes you feel confortable, calm, and in my case free of nervousness. Dr. Peñuñuri and his staff are amazing, very profesional, kind, respectfull, and helpfull. That´s why it´s shocking to hear all these bad experiences with Dr. Peñuñuri, when i´ve been there and gotten all these precedures done, just like you guys, and none of the things you have described and said had NOT happend to me or my family members that treat themselves with Dr. Peñuñuri. I always recommend Dr. Sergio Peñuñuri to everyone i know, because he is a very honest, efficient, and responsable dentist.

The poster claiming to be out of "Bell Gardens, CA" (place in LA) is actually posting from MEXICO.

Hi, Jaslene White and I´m from Bell Gardens, CA., previous post shows that you're posting from Mexico(very confusing!) anyway, I can't verify that you're a client of dr. Penunnuri but I only had 2 big implant problems out of 12 implants most of the problems were the crowns and porcelain onlays. Seems that is not a big deal to you but having to go for replacing crowns that collects food and extracting implants was a hassle after more than $12,000 spent. If you really are a pacient of this doctor I am sure you will be back if not I have no comments. My advice is wait and see...

I am sorry to have to make this post, for I truly took a liking to Dr. Penunuri. However, after failing to honor his '5 year warranty' by refusing to return my phone calls or answer my emails for follow up on two 'warrantied' teeth, I finally had to return to my local dentist for a check-up and cleaning. I was appalled at the work I had seen done by Dr. Penunuri.

The implants were sticking out of the gums (more than 50% in some cases), were ill fit to the crowns, had great gaps and spacing problems, loose crowns, etc. etc. My local dentist was polite as she showed me all the problems. I think she felt sorry for me. She didn't bad mouth Dr. Penunuri in any way, just saying that they simply do not have the training down there that one would expect of a dentist up here in the US.

I saw Dr. Penunuri six times over the course of three years. I had extensive work done and was generally satisfied. The teeth that fell out and the crowns that broke I took in stride as they were repaired in the course of my other treatment—and I truly enjoyed the trips to Tijuana. I would have kept it up and been none the wiser had he only returned my phone calls or answered my emails for a follow-up appointment to replace two teeth (one post & crown and one implant—the second one to be tried on that particular tooth following a failed post and crown on the selfsame tooth) that he had installed but had fallen out. I got the impression that he, quite simply, had had enough of me since the repairs he was now having to make to his own work were just costing him too much of his time and money.

I will have to live with his poor work and have it repaired as necessary—which shouldn't be too long in the coming given the looks of things. I have decided to just pay the high price of American dentists, which will leave me recourse in the courts should one of them do to me as Dr. Penunuri had done. Plus, the travel and time lost from work to go to Mexico just don't seem to add up any more to be that good of a deal—not to mention the extensive amount of follow up repair work that now lies before me.

I gambled and lost.

Live and learn!
