I never thought I would be a case for the “medical books” but it seems that I am. I am writing you in hope that you may have some knowledge that can offer some perspective about my medical situation.
I am 42 year old female. I am at a level 6 pain 24/7 and have been for 1.5 years. The pain is located in my T8 zone, right behind my bra band; where I had lipo. haven’t been a day without pain meds since my lipo surgury (February 2007) I currently take 6 (vikadin) per day. I have had several x-rays, MRIs, & nerve tests without any findings. Recently, I had two series of cortisone injections without success.
Today, it dawned on me that I may have an infection. Is this possible? I have no sores and everything looks great from my back but is it possible that I have an infection inside causing all of this constant suffering. And, if that is possible what kind could it be?
I have taken prescription Lyrica, muscle relaxers (Skolaxen), Naproxin without positive impact. I am tired of being dependent on pain pills to get through the course of the day.
I did speak briefly to my PS (10 mo ago) and he said that in no way did he pass across my spine when performing the lipo and he sincerely didn’t think the pain could be related to the procedure. The two little scars are a 4” distance from my spine each way. My surgeon is very reputable and I have had procedures from him years prior. I believe that the lipo procedure was done correctly; however, I think it is possible that my pain is a result of the procedure in some form. I just want to get better.
Honestly, none of the docs have been able to figure this out and it sounds like I am going to be referred to the Mayo Clinic. Thank you for taking the time to read my post. Midwestfriend
I am sorry that you are having pain so long after liposuction. It really truly is a very unusual, as your surgeon has mentioned. It seems you had quite an extensive workup, and certainly it is difficult for me to tell what is going on from just a few paragraphs of your summary, but it probably is unlikely that you have an ongoing infection and that this is the case of your pain. I assume you have seen a variety of different specialists and this would have been considered.
I do agree with your surgeon that it is extremely unlikely that he passed across your spine as he is doing liposuction. But it is possible that there might have been some trauma to the muscle from liposuction in a way that you have long term pain of the muscle that might not be relieved by muscle relaxants or pain medication. But, it is difficult to really give you much more of an opinion than this. I do encourage you to continue with your workup with the specialist that has been recommended.
