Drink Baking Soda Water to lose weight??

Postby uneven123 » Thu Sep 11, 2008 4:52 pm

Has anybody heard of this? A friend told me they know someone who drank a glass of water with 1 tsp of baking soda every day for a year and lost a lot of weight. Apparently it helps the body's acid levels normalize, which in turn helps with losing weight. What do you all think? I guess there's no reason not to try it?

YUCK!!! Who wants to drink that? I got fat because food is yummy and I like to eat it!! My problem wasn't my acid levels, it was not eating right and not exercising. Period.

Do you learn to eat properly? What happens when you stop drinking it?

Bottom line... there is no quick fix. You have to learn healthy eating habits, you have to learn portion control, you have to have a healthy relationship with food, and you have to exercise regularly!!!

Somebody else may have lost weight doing this, but you have to look at what else she did or didn't do. A lot of people don't eat right when they start these things. I have a friend that drank vinegar. She also only ate one can of tuna a day. That's it. She lost the weight she wanted to, but in a very unhealthy manner. She gained it all back plus some.

Sorry to totally get on my soap box about this.  I had to reread what I had written to make sure I didn't sound to fired up! I want you to be successful and I have only seen long term results from people that learn how to eat right and exercise.

Candi_girl -- you are funny. It does sound yucky doesn't it? I know what you're getting at, but I was only suggesting that possibly drinking this to maximize the body's acid level could help. I know the main components of losing weight will be to get my butt moving for an hour a day and to eat healthily. But thank you for making sure I am not trying to find an easy gimmick to lose weight! Please keep kicking my butt if you feel like I'm not doing my best. I really want to overcome the weight issue.

this is not really a good idea - if you intake too much baking soda (sodium bicarbonate) you can really mess up your balances(metabolic) and possible cardiac complications.
Like Candi_girls said there really is not quick fix. It took me a full year to remove that 60lbs and it was hard work, harder than quiting smoking, changing my whole mental attitude and life style. 90lbs is a huge goal - chop it down to 10 or 15lb mini goals think smaller uneven123 and you will not be so overwhelmed with the amount.

I wouldn't do this diet.

I was curious about the health risks and did a google search.

What is wrong with drinking baking soda water? Isn't that also alkaline water?
Reverse Aging, Alkaline Water and AlkaLife®

Baking soda is sodium bicarbonate; adding it to drinking water does not raise the pH value of the water. However, once in the blood stream, it will act as alkaline buffer and, when too much acid is around, the lungs will exhale CO2. The only problem with this method is that continued consumption of baking soda will upset the potassium/sodium balance of the body, creating bad side effects as high blood pressure.

Whatever you do, be careful.

actually the chemical make up in baking soda is very similar to otc heartburn medications... It has the exact effect of tums or rollaids.... (my bf in college was a chemistry major)...so when I was pg I remembered what she said and everytime I had heartburn I would drink one tablespoon of baking soda with a glass of water.... Yes it was GROSS, but I had a sever aversion to any kind of otc heartburn reducer and would throw up if I ate one...I did NOT have an aversion to the baking soda water.... It worked like a charm to get rid of unwanted gas in the tummy too...BUT no it wouldnt help you lose weight... I know I made me gain water weight by all the water I retained after drinking it!

i am in the process of drinking baking soda water to lose weight i have lost 12pounds in 2weeks.the fatty foods you eat are acidic.you wont find and fatty alkaline foods.once you eat all those acidic foods.your body turns acidic.then when you go to lose weight it is harder because in order to lose weight your body has to be at a certain PH level.toward alkaline.the pounds just drop off once you get the acid out of your body.i use 1 full teaspoon in a half glass of water each day.i was trying to drink it with my meal, but i mostly eat out so thats not working out.baking soda is sodium bicarbonate and your body makes some of it.your pancreas does.i like to do a 3 out of 5 day regiment.that means i skip 2 days then start again,so my body can rest a few days.my uncle how ever has done baking soda all his life for acid reflux he did 1 big tablespoonful in the AM hours.he ate lots of fatty stuff late at night and never gained weight.he was about 110 120 short and thin man.i think the baking soda-alkaline turns the acidic food i eat alkaline, there for i dont get the fatty part stored in my cells.you must take potassium when doing this regiment as it pulls the potassium out of your body, your muscles will start twitching.when the acid starts coming out your butt will burn for a few days till most of the acid is out.this is still a work in progress for me.but you get the gist of it.
