Having a VERY hard time after lap band surgery....

Having a VERY hard time after lap band surgery....

Postby M-Luv » Sun Apr 16, 2006 6:41 pm

and I am totally freaked out right now. I cannot sip more than 2 ounces for hours because I have this clogged feeling in my chest (between my boobs). It HURTS so bad! So because I cannot drink as directed (five 8 oz. protein drinks and 64 ounces of other clear liquid) I have lost 16 lbs. I should be happy but I am in tears with fear and doubt. I am SOOOO hungry. My chest is tight and full but my stomach below is STARVING. I have lost it a few times, 4 times to be exact. I had to page my doctor today on Easter; I felt bad but I had to. He said that I should not be feeling this stuck feeling because it is just liquid and it should go down smoothly. He suggested I wait 1 or 2 days and if nothing changes to give him a call because it could be a few things: 1) my chest could still be swollen from surgery, 2) bleeding (i hope not), or 3) band is on too tight but doubts it. So please your fingers, eyes, toes, just everything crossed for me....... but I hope this pain leaves soon otherwise I will cry
I will keep you posted!

M-luv,

I was banded 4 years ago and it was the best thing I have ever done for myself :P . I can truly relate to your feelings. After my surgery for 2 WEEKS, I could sip very little. I thought I would starve to death  . Don't worry, you won't. Every banded person I know went through the same thing. I even thought I was having a heart attack when I drank some broth shortly after my surgey  . The pressure and tightness in my chest was incredible. It felt like an elephnat was standing in my chest. My doc and several other patiens assured me my chest and stomach were swollen.

I felt "head" hunger. My stomach DID growl, but it was mostly in my head. I was used to eating soooo much more. I did protein drinks and drank broth for a little longer than your doc usually recommends. I missed "real" food so bad that I blended 1 piece of baked chicken and very loose mashed potatoes. It was the best chicken and mashed potato soup anyone could have had. I don't recommend that, but I stayed on very loose foods a lot longer than everyone else I knew. I was scared I would hurt my band.

Be patient with yourself, you had major surgery. Your body is healing AND it will take your head a little longer to adjust than the rest of your body.

I lost 15 lbs in less than 2 weeks :D ! So I began to question whether I woulod starve to death. My doc assured me that I was swollen. Some people have really sensitive stomachs. My sotmach did NOT like my band for a month  . That inturn made me miserable, BUT I was in it for the long haul. My band, stomach and I are best friends NOW. That feeling passed (mine did within a couple of weeks) and all is well.

I am getting ready for a tummy tuck, lost all my weight and have been stable for over two years. Talk about being nervous. I know what that recovery period will entail (don't like it), but know that is just part of the process.

If you are truly concerned, call your doc. I am not a doctor, but researched the band for 11 months EVERYDAY. I was prepared for the godd and the bad. Right now you are going through the bad :( . Take comfort in knowing that it does not last very long.

If your gut (not punn intended) tells you there is truly a problem, call your doc. Afterall, he got paid the big bucks.

If you are still very concerned email me privately.

Don't worry! these are the things that happen after lapband surgery, it will fly off soon. If you think that the pain is more than you can bear immediately consult your surgeon about this.

but i think the pain would get off after few days, just try to stay calm
