eddy2806,
I'm new to the "skin" board, and certainly no doc, but I'd recommend that you see a derm doc and ask about a less-invasive procedure (chem peel?) that would be done on the entire face to even things out. You should probably be using special, gentle cleansers, toners and emolients for starters.

My doc had told me that fraxel can be quite aggressive, and actually result in some short-term pigmentation (which sounds like what you have). It's possible that the skin under your eyes is just too thin and tender to have fraxel done on it. But what's done is done, so work on getting the rest of your facial skin balanced with this area.

I'd go SLOW and gentle, and research any recommended treatment involving laser before you take the plunge. You could be looking at a couple years of gradual improvement, but skin does slough off, and in time, the area under your eyes will probably normalize. Good luck to you.

thanks Bugjune.
i did once go to the derm to try to get help, but she was so dum that she put the chem peel all over my face but she didnt put it under my eyes, whn i ask her why she didnt put it under my eyes she said that is not good to put it there, i got so mad cause i told her thats why i went there for, so she said she could not do it. so i pay 80 dollars to get a peeling all over my face except under my eyes. i tried to go see the doctor that did the laser but he just tried to brush it off like they always do when they mess up saying that is better than before. is like i trade my hyperpigmentation for redness. i am using something call biafine that is suppost to work for that, and it did for a while but then it stop.. but thanks alot for your help any way bugjune.. if you find out somenthing else let me know please.. thanks

eddy2806,
My guess is that the derm doc did NOT do the area under your eyes because it was traumatized, and she was trying to get the rest of your face in balance with the under-eye area (in terms of pigment, texture, etc.). So don't write her off yet.

Did the redness eventually fade? Ideally, in time your entire face will be the same shade and texture.

You are right about the lame laser doc. Often, those who are incompetent are either never going to admit it, or - even worse - don't even know they are lame!

Good luck on your continuing journey.

To Daytrader,

I'm really sorry to see this happen to you. I can speak first hand regarding this. Some people actually PERMANENTLY hyperpigment MORE when they have the procedure - no matter what the settings are. 2 months may be a bit early to judge this as the laser still hasn't fully done its thing.

Let me ask you, how many treatments have you had? Did you have any hyperpigment prior to the procedure? What areas did you have treated? Do you have fair or olive skin tone by nature?

Here's what happend to me maybe there is something common:

I started with cool touch just around eyes and forehead for wrinkles. had no hyperpigment. Noticed some reddish brown spots around my eyes maybe 6 months later.. Was recommended fraxel to remove it. had 6 fraxel treatments over the course of two years around the eyes and forehead. It made it much worse/terrible -

The hyperpigment initially WENT AWAY after the first series of monthly treatments.. but then came in worse, maybe 6 months AFTER the the 3 treatments were finished. This exact same pattern happend on the 2nd series of 3 treatments a year later. When it was all done I had a raccoon mask.

The only way to fight this for me was to go for another series of 3 fraxels, full face and forehead. The NEW nurse used several different settings to try to get my face/forehead to blend.. with the knowledge of what had happend to me and how my skin reacted prior. She did a great job but unfortunately the hyperpigment didnt' take at the top of my forehead.. so it is lighter up there.. (my original color) but the rest of my face finally got even.. it's darker but it's even..

In my opinion, you should never spot treat with fraxel.. it's either full face/forehead or not at all..

Hope this helps you figure things out.. I still think 2 months is a little early to judge - not much though.

Thanks for your post......I had it done around my eyes.....and it just should not be so horribly deep red and brown 8 weeks later....I am just scared it will stay like this, cause it has not gotten lighter at all....much worst as days go by with the darkening of the skin. I am olive skined but I had no Ideal that this would happen. The doctor told me I would be red for about 1 week or 2 at the longest.....I just really depressed with the outcome.

Thanks
Bev

yea.. If it's getting darker as the days/weeks go by it probably is permanent.. i'm Italian - olive skin as well.

I fought it for 2 years with obaji /hydroquinone etc.. but it's stubborn, the pigment kept coming back. Pigment is pretty deep.. try lighteners first, do not go the IPL route - fraxel is safer - alot of issues with fat loss reported on IPL..

Make sure you find out what settings the doctor performed. There is a pigment setting and a wrinkle setting.. .. if they used the wrinkle setting then you may want to try again just around the eyes with the pigment setting.. If that doesn't work you may have to just go for it all over using the first setting that damaged you.. it will likely be even when you are done.. but again that is something you have to weigh. It takes a bit of a leap of faith that your entire face will react the same way your eyes did.. but it likely will.. I'm not an expert, so please keep looking for solutions. All I can do is share what worked for me.. I know it's frustrating.. And I wish you the best in whatever you choose to do.

Hi -

I had just one round with Fraxel in January 2007 - and I think it did help my skin - however I did have some hyperpigmentation and a few red streaks on my face - this gradually faded (I notice it this year) and I think it started doing that when I started using Azelaic acid cream (Azelex) on my face - it even took away my hyperpigmentation - you may want to check into that - It is by prescription -
