Monovision--How long to adjust?

Monovision--How long to adjust?

Postby kind-of-me » Tue Jul 29, 2008 9:18 pm

Hi Dr. Feldman,

I had lasik two weeks ago. I received monovision (I'm 45 yrs. old) and am wondering how long before I know whether I need to strengthen my undercorrected eye?

I notice that I do not see signs too well when I'm driving. Also, I have trouble seeing detail on my 50" television which is 12 feet away.

The monovision is not causing me any trouble, I just feel like I am straining to see detail at a distance.

Other than that, I love it. It was fast and painless.

Thank you for your time.

Monovision Update:

It's been 4 weeks and my vision is the same as my original post.

The Lasik is wonderful and I love the monovision. Will a revision eliminate the monovision or can some of it be maintained?

Dear Kind-of-me,

We often forget that LASIK is a procedure which may take some time to heal. Your brain’s adaptation to using one eye for distance and one eye for reading usually occurs within three months. Thus, I would definitely recommend that you consider just waiting and see where you end up as healing occurs. Adjustments can definitely be considered once you are stable. In monovision, the distance eye must be perfect for patient’s to be happy.

Can distance eye self-strengthen?

Postby kind-of-me » Thu Aug 21, 2008 12:17 pm

Thank you for your reply. The information is very helpful.

One last question about the distance eye.

I can tell my distance eye is not quite strong enough and has seemed to have stabilized. Will it self-strengthen or improve on it's own in the 3 months?

Thank you again for your time!

Can distance eye self-strengthen?

Dear kind-of-me,

The decreased distance that you notice may be caused by a few things:
a. an under or overcorrection in the distance eye
b. your brain not adapting to the reduced distance vision in the near eye
c. both a and b

The amount of time for healing may also depend upon whether you were originally nearsighted or farsighted. I would recommend discussing with your doctor during your next visit, the difficulties you are experiencing. They will be able to advise you of the best options for you.

Thank you for your reply.

Although I may need a little enhancement for long distance, I really LOVE the results of LASIK.
