Does gatorade cause fluid retention during post op?

Postby i_want_wow » Tue Jun 27, 2006 8:45 pm

most people drink gatorade to replenish sodium and potassium .....so, do you think it could possibly cause fluid rention? more swelling.....

especially if you consumed too much salt that day?.....advice!

It is important in the first 3-4 days to replenish your fluids. You lose so much fluid from the surgety that it takes a few days to get back to normal. My PS told me to drink gatorade for the first few days, which really helped me to start feeling better. Beyond the first few days, you don't need gatorade.

hope this helps

Unfortunately, I think the puff ball phase is inevitable. Just keep drinking lots of water and the swelling will pass. It's a part of the process of healing and yes.. it does SUCK!!! lol.. I am very swollen today and I think perhaps the walking 3.5 miles yesterday had something to do with it but mostly that it is inevitable that some days will be swollen days. Take care :D :D :D

Who told you this?

Gatorade is fluid. Surgery tends to cause fluid retention.

Gatoraid is loaded with Sodium. Sodium is the same as salt. Sodium will cause you to retain fluids. I would be careful with drinking loads of Gatoraid.

Everyone needs to be careful of their sodium intake. My DH has congestive heart failure, his cardiologist told us that no one should ever have more than 2000 mg of sodium in 1 day. Most Americans have 2x the intake than they should.

Just be careful on the sodium.

The usual recommendation here is to push water or water with lemon, no junk cokes, or anything diet.

I was wondering where you might have heard it. I was not trying to be pejorative. Gatorade is as "balanced" a salt solution as you can get over the counter. The salt within it does not cause swelling. Your surgery does that. It is really how your body's biochemistry (genetics) meets the technique used and your post-operative management to be specific.

do you mean by a "balanced" salt solution?

i suppose i worded it wrong. i didn'/t mean that it would cause more swellling. i thought by replenishing my electrolytes(spelling?) and ignoring my salt consumption...i will appear "full/round/puffy"
