Emu Oil/Arnica Gel/MSM Cream

Postby ThighsBeGone!! » Mon Jan 29, 2007 8:23 am

Hi Everyone,

I have read that some of you are using one or several of these products (Emu Oil/Arnica Gel/MSM Cream) during your recovery. What brand of the product(s) are you using? And, if you can, please rate how satisfied you are with it. I would REALLY appreciate it. :)
I am going to have 5000cc taken out on Feb. 22nd and I want to try anything that could help my recovery. I have already purchased the Arnica Sinecch pills for pre and post op.

Thanks so much!
Rebecca

oils

Postby retiree54 » Mon Jan 29, 2007 10:57 am

Yes I have used all 3 with great success
I applied Arnica get like day 3 but not around my open incisions
Then I moved to just MSM cream cause I know its good for inflammation and stiffness for arthritis and also helps the immune system etc
But I also take MSM capsules 6/day just read on the internet about it
Then I am now using EMU oil from a place in Canada...Got a big bottle
I know Enu nourishes and rebuilds the skin. I have good skin tone and guess what, NO ITCHING at all as my nerves come back on all my numb areas... 8)
So i progressed tru all 3 and using the Emu oil ,my 2nd stage garment is so much easier to put on...

I am going to take a shower and use the Arnica gel today. I am beginning to itch, too. Not bad, but just a little annoying. Retiree54, what is MSM? I am going to google to find out. Also I saw EM oil at health food store, just did not buy. I am weaning myself off the vicodin, too. I do not like the way it makes me feel. I am going to use extra strentgh Tylenol. Thanks for the input.......Betz51

Emu Oil

Postby Salsachick » Tue Jan 30, 2007 8:11 pm

I had my ps about 8 weeks ago. I massage about once every other day now.

Do the veterans out there suggest I get a specific oil like the EMU or MSM oils? How are they different from other oils? I use Almond oil.

And, where can I get this EMU or MSM oil? I live in NJ.

Thanks.

Arnica Oil

Postby NatashaK. » Sun Feb 04, 2007 10:04 pm

I tried several arnica gels and they didn't seem to do anything. But when I switched to arnica oil (from Whole Foods...it is arnica in olive oil), I got very rapid healing of the bruising, and it seemed to reduce soreness too. (When I used this oil, I actually enjoyed massaging my legs, which I could not do with any other oil.) I would apply the oil after a hot bath (once I was allowed to bathe), and massage it in, concentrating on the bruises. The results were quite amazing. I could see the bruises reducing in size and intensity by the next mornign! And they just disappeared...I never went thru all those ugly in-between colors. My massage therapist (who saw the changes every time I went) said he had never seen bruises heal/disappear that fast. My dermatologist is also a big advocate of olive oil for skincare, so the OO base was a good thing too.

I didn't start using this stuff until about day 14 post-surgery (I'd been using the homeopathic tabs and the gel til then), and by day 21 I had no bruises anywhere. I had some serious bruising that wasn't getting better, but when the PS and his nurses saw my results and rapid healing with arnica oil, they started taking notes, to tell other patients it was worth a try. I just wish I'd known about this earlier--I wonder how quickly I could have healed if I started using it immediately instead of wasting time with the gel...

Personally, I wouldn't use emu oil-- it's derived from animals, and the arnica in olive oil was so amazingly effective, felt great, and left my skin in great condition.

Once the bruises were gone, the only thing I had to work on was the little scars. I switched to pure unrefined shea butter for those, and that seems to be working really nicely to reduce the appearance/color of the scars. (I had a facelift too, and actually, I'm more worried about those scars than the lipo scars...)

Thanks so much for your comments Natasha! I think I will give the Arnica oil a try! I don't want to use anything derived from animals, so I will stay away from the Emu oil. Thanks again!

Hi Thighs,
I should also mention the supplements I was taking (alone, I didn't see (fast) results from them, but maybe they played a supporting role? Again, the big changes for me happened after I began the arnica oil, but I was also taking:
Vitamin C (the form that is buffered so it doesn't irritate stomach)
Bromelain-- I think 200 mg 3X per day. There is some clinical evidence that this does help break up bruising, so good to add this to your regimen.
Vit E (not high doses for me...perhaps 400 mg every couple days)
Zyflamend ( a blend of herbs, from Whole Foods. The PM formula did seem to help me sleep, too!)
Vitamin B complex , a type that included niacin, which can cause that Niacin-flush, which can be a little uncomfortable for about 15 minutes, but the flush means it amps up circulation.

Early on, I was also taking the homeopathic arnica tabs. But I stopped those by the time I began the arnica oil.

Also tried various Vitamin K creams-- not even the really expensive ones seemed to help. Nothing approached the effrectiveness of the arnica oil, applied and massaged in after a hot bath or hot compress.

Best of luck with your surgery!
