For all the ladies that say that the have thyroid problems , dieting does not cause thyroid problems only shortage of iodine in the diet for more than 6-12 months can trigger some thyroid problems.
But thyroid problem may be the cause of your weight gain!!

I echo the statements of the ladies who have said they gained weight in other areas after having lipo. I had lipo done to my thighs and flanks. I am a LIFE LONG exerciser, and extremely consistent with it. By this I mean in the last 20+ years I have always had pretty intense exercise as a part of my life (generally a minimum of 5 days a week). I don't take a month or two off from exercise, I have never done that, and eat fairly healthy.

I didn't notice the weight gain right away, but slowly weight started appearing in areas I NEVER had a problem with (arms, waist, back). My lipo was like 5 years ago and I have JUST started to get the "balance" back in my body. This has been through really intense exercise (P90X and Insanity, and no I'm not a coach for these programs) I personally feel lipo throws the "natural balance" of your body out of whack. The surgeons don't tell you this, they just advise you not to gain weight. But the problem is your body no longer "responds" they way it previously did. So your body, for lack of a better expression, "behaves" differently, even though you are doing the same things (eating and exercise) you did pre-lipo.

Please, please know this is not intended to be negative or scare you, it is just my honest opinion. But yes, in my experience you DO gain weight--and in other areas.

Truthfully, when I read these boards I am amazed at how many people get "revisions" or go back for more lipo--that is a big clue right there. I have some unevenness but am too afraid to remove any more fat to even dare "revise" it. Again, please don't take this to be negative, it is truly meant to help those that have not had lipo yet. I really wish someone would have said all these things to me--and that I had listened.

Wishing everyone the best in whatever you decide for yourselves.

Hi - I just read all the posts. My personal opinion is if you are predisposed to weight gain, you are always going to have to watch it. I don't think lipo causes you to gain weight, but possibly redistribute in different areas if you do gain weight. About five years ago, I had upper arm lipo because in my younger years I did a lot of gymnastics and my upper arms were out of proportion after having kids and as I aged they got flabby. I was and still am very happy with the results of my lipo on my upper arms. In fact, I lost about five pounds right after and kept it off until I started going through menopause at age 50. So I am 52 now and after going through menopause, and at the other end of it thankfully, I gained about 10 pounds, mostly in my abs and flank areas (typical areas of postmenopausal women at my age). So I just went in and had my abs and flanks lipo'd. So far I am happy with my results, but I dare not get on the scale because I am only 1-1/2 weeks post op and still have a lot of swelling. However, when I am able again, I plan to exercise and eat a normal diet. A normal diet for me is a few carbs, fruits and veggies, and adequate protien and calcium--around 1200 - 1500 calories a day with moderate exercise (3-4 times a week on the treadmill 30 plus minutes at 3.5 MPG or above along with a few times a week of weight training).
Maybe because I adjusted to this other body type after meno, and have learned what I can and cannot eat, maybe it will be okay. I am 5'2 and weighed approximately 135 before lipo. I managed to stay at that weight after meno, and I am a medium body type so really not too too bad as my BMI was still under 125.
I would advise not having any lipo until after you have had kids for sure. Our bodies do change whether we like it or not.

Camelion, the same thing happened to me! I am 4'11". I was heavy in the thighs, mostly inner thighs. I first had a tummy tuck, I was pretty pleased with that - got rid of the pooch, but he took the scar up like a person who would wear high cut panties. Luckily my scar is almost invisible, so I don't mind if it peaks out of my bathing suit bottoms, but bikinis I cannot wear now. I have to wear Tankinis. The doc (Dr. Joshua Halpern Tampa, FL) lipo'd me a month later. He took way too much off my outer thighs. Now I do not have my former figure 8 figure that I used to have, although my thighs were on the heavy side (mostly because my legs are very muscular). I gained weight in all the same places you mention. When I gain weight I feel like a linebacker! I ended up having a breast reduction, that thankfully my insurance paid for. That helped in the shirt area, but I still gain weight in my arms, etc. The face is the worst. I am on appetitie suppressants, because I cannot stand the way I look when I gain weight. I am hoping to get some facial laser work done to shrink my cheek area. All I have to say is, if you are having lipo - be very conservative, and look into other techniques that do not remove the fat cell, but helps to empty it out. That way if you gain weight it will not go to your back, boobs, upper arms, upper stomach area, and face. My face was always nice and contoured, now I look like a chipmonk! It pisses me off to no end. And my womanly curves are gone. Sure, my thighs are thinner, but too straight. A cosmetic surgeon should have a good appreciation for the curves of a woman and always advise a woman to keep a good ratio between the bust, waist and thigh area. The only thing I can do is keep my weight as low as I can. But I do go up and down. I am looking (when I can afford it) at fraxel, ulthera, and maybe thermage to thin my face and tighten up my upper arms. Let me emphasize, be very conservative with lipo. I went from a hourglass to an apple shape - that is not good for the heart.

HAd lipo 3 years ago with excellent results. i think many people gain weight because they are unable to do strenuous or vigorous exercise after surgery! I did end up gaining weight due to overindulgence at restaurants and not exercising, and the weight showed in different body parts that normally wouldn't have gained on me such as arms, stomach, hips, and boobs. the fat that did go to my legs went on the front and back of the thighs, not the sides. i lost the weight but it is so hard to keep it off because i love restaurants soooo much! i am currently 8 pounds lighter than my pre-lipo weight but i appear to be 20 pounds lighter due to my shape. my doctor said that any significant weight gain (above what you weighed prior to surgery) can cause the sucked-out fat cells to grow back once your existing fat cells get filled up. Pregnancy would fall under this category.

i had experience this but the only thing i come to know about lipo is that yeah certainly it is good to remove fats but once we applied it to our body we should continue exercise and keep contact with our doctor if we might get any problem. removing fats with lipo is approachable but after it one should take care of her body to maintain their figure !

Re: gain weight after lipo?

Postby ecoaussie » Sat Sep 21, 2013 12:45 pm

I was a stable 135 for 15 years, active (run hike cycle) but had a bit of extra on my flanks and lower abdomen. I'm 5'1", and a strong athletic build and tended to have deposits of fat instead of all over.

I made the decision to have smart lipo in Oct 2011 to remove my lower abdominal pooch pocket, and my flank rolls.

The surgeon removed around 1700cc (I'm told).

The month of wearing a compression garment was tough.

Initially I was pleased with my lower abs, not so pleased with my flanks, and my incision holes were very noticeable.

I spoke to my surgeon at the three month mark about a revision of my flanks and was talked into spending another $1700 on Cool Sculpting of the area, which did nothing.

About 10 months after lipo, I began noticing that my breasts were getting larger. Now nearly two years post lipo, I have gained 8 pounds of fat, on my flanks (ha ha, guess he didn't treat those areas as well as he said), my upper abdomen (always slim, now overhangs my pants) my upper arms, upper back and underarm/breast area.

My activity level and diet is healthy. My only explanation is the removal of the fat stores somehow triggered my body to begin storing fat, and in places I never had before. This new fat is extremely resisitant.

I wish I had never had the lipo done.

Save yourself the time and money and stick to your natural self, because what you may end up with after the surgeon gets his hands on you may be very different from what you imagine.

Best of luck

Hello mfuller1957,
I am sorry to hear about your experience after lipo. Once you have it you definitely need to change your diet and be mindful of what you are eating.

As for your scar, there are some great products out there that can help either with new and or old scars. I highly recommend the following products.

Silicone sheets are an effective solution for both new and old scars. They are also medically proven to help reduce the appearance, size, height, thickness, and color of scars for all skin types and color.

ImageOleeva Tummy Tuck Scar Reduction Silicone Sheet - (2 x 23 in; 5 x 58 cm)

ImageScar Fx Silicone Belt Wrap (6"x48") - Revolutionary New Product

ImageScar Fx Silicone Scar Sheet - 1" x 22" (Self Adhering ) - Clear

ImageKelo-cote Scar Healing & Reduction Gel (15 grams)

Hope this helps :D !

So sorry to everyone. My suggestion for those who haven't had liposuction yet is to steer clear. The body defends it's healthy fat. Liposuction is marketed to those who already have stable, healthy weight and good diet and exercise habits. But these (and other) people gain weight. Liposuction isn't magic. It sucks out fat, changing your hormones, and changing your fat depositing patterns. It may take a year or more to see the changes, so don't believe those that think they have great results in the short-term. That is if they weren't maimed, there body will eventually regain essential fat. Yes,it's true.

I wish wish wish I had read some of these posts prior to my TT and liposuction. Was just thinking today that if I was an evil person, I would not tell the truth about what has happened to me. Was also thinking there must be a lot of evil people out there who are keeping quiet. I don't have the link, but it should be easy to find. A study was done in Which there was a control group of dieting women vs. the same number of women who had liposuction. They were followed in regular intervals later...like three, six and twelve months later. One year later, ALL the women who had liposuction regained ALL their weight or more and in weird places in their body. ALL the women. 100%. Didn't matter what their eating habits were. WTH! I regained all my weight and a little more and now I have freakish Saddlebags and hug hips. I am Short and it looks weird as hell. So, I've gone on a super duper strict diet and I'm now 14 pounds LESS than after my lipo. Guess what? It made it a little WORSE. Now, I am looking freakish. Thin on top and huge thighs and hips. Like a bowling pin. And I can't seem to do anything about it, except maybe get more lipo. And did you know that lipo takes out lymph nodes? Just found that out. This can't be healthy. What the hexx am I going to do now? I have MUCH M uCH bigger thighs and hips now than I had before even at fourteen pounds LESS. This fat is super weird and resilient. Do NOT do lipo. It is unhealthy and unnatural and Mother Nature always wins. I feel so betrayed, lied to, and was
Uninformed and am now basically screwed. You are soooo lucky you found these posts. Do not do it.

I think that some people just let their bodies go a bit after lipo, also the body could naturally be trying to balance itself with a bit more fat after getting rid of it.

I did gain some weight in the years since liposuction but I know that this happened when I ate more than I needed and so just cut back to healthy eating and weight then stays stable. I am still extremely happy with my liposuction. I had saddlebags before and these are still gone. My tummy is not as flat as it was after lipo but then again this is many years later and I also have gone through menopause and so weight gain usually happens around that time.

I personally recommend liposuction.
http://mylipostory.blogspot.com/ My liposuction blog can be seen in the Archives from November 2006 onwards. I had a facelift more recently which I decided to blog about in the lipo blog as well.
