i have been reading up on all things lipo and am surprised that many people gain weight after liposuction. For the ladies who have hard a lot of fat removed (e.g., large volume lipo), how long did your results last? If you gained weight after surgery, what did the weight gain do to your body proportions? Do you have to decrease calories or increase exercise to maintain the post-surgery body? I am really concerned that I will go through my surgery and end up putting on weight in other areas of the body. I am in the normal weight range and do life a healthy lifestyle, so I think that I would be all right, however I am really suprised and concerned.
This is so sad. I had liposuction done about 5 years ago and was so excited to have it done. I was normal weight and was always skinny on my upper body, never had a problem with it. I had liposuction done on my outter thighs, inner thighs, knees, and buttocks which were my problem areas. Right after my liposuction I started to notice that my breasts were getting bigger, then my shirts did not fit anymore, my tummy was growing and even my face was looking fatter. At first I did not pay much attention because I was so happy with my lipo and my legs thinner, etc.
But some months later, I noticed that my clothes on my upper body did not fit at all even my bras. I had to start buying bigger sizes and didn't know what to think about that. I went from "small" on shirts to "large" and "extra large" and on my bras I went from cup "A" to cup "C", my weist line was so defined and now I look like a tank, my arms are so big now that I have shirts' sleeves make a mark on them. I started excercising more but the weight kept coming in, I couldn't stop it. I started going more to the gym with no luck.
I now weight 30 more lbs than before and I look deformed. Can you imagine 30 lbs everywhere else but where you had liposuction ? I now gain weight on my face, arms, breasts, tummy, back, etc. I look so deformed and I hate it so bad. I don't know what to do.
I've even started having thyroid problems because I've starved myself sometimes to try to loose the weight somehow. I'm not sure if this only happens to people who do significant liposuction. I've read of many people who are going through this same thing and are as frustrated as me. My surgeon only told me not to gain weight but I do exactly the same thing as before, I excercise tha same as before but now I'm 30 lbs heavier and deformed. Be careful with liposuction especially if you are going to do some significant amount.
Newdaydawning Please try not to let negative surgery stories effect your decision on having the lipo. There are very many positive results along with the horror stories you may hear. Now granted if you live a clean healthy lifestyle like I do and as you said you do. Feel confident in your decision trust in your doc and be smart before and after your surgery to get the very best results possible. Remember recovery has alot to do with your mental attitude also. For me Iam a bit nervous about the discomfort and pain after the surgery but Iam in a very secure positive space as far as never having this little pooch return. I will cut down on the alcohol and add another very vigious cardio day to acheive this goal. You are much younger and should have fabulous results! You have come this far now go for the big prize the new healtier you! Sounds good. Best of luck to you.Oh and my garment came with the procedure its the 2nd stage garment i have to purchase if my doc feels I need it. He said to wait a few weeks to see.
Thanks, Hotgrandma. That is encouraging. Although the thought of weight gain is disturbing, I don't think I will gain weight after lipo. I have been the same weight/size since I was in junior high and am comfortable with it aside from the fat pockets. My husband and I want to have kids someday and I was wondering what to expect during pregnancy. We aren't planning to start a family for several years, but I am curious about how a post-lipo body is affected during/after pregnancy. Does the pleasant proportion/shape come back?
Newdaydawning, I also thought that I wouldn't gain weight because my weight had been totally stable for the previous 15 years. I maintain my weight by eating only when I'm hungry and stopping when I'm satissfied, not full. Within about 3-4 weeks of liposuction (when I first weighed myself), the scales starting trending upward. When my weight kept increasing, I started researching "liposuction and weight gain" because it was pretty obvious that the procedure was the one variable that had changed. I have done a ton of research, and I was shocked to see the number of studies and information that point to why we shouldn't be doing liposuction. A number of people on forums have also reported fat redistribution and a tendency to gain weight. The other responder advises you to "feel confident in your decision" and "trust in your doc". I would not let a stranger on the Internet be the one that influences you to go forward with a fairly aggressive procedure. You don't what the motives are of these people. Plastic surgeons are likely to lessen your fears, but keep in mind, they need our business! If liposuction were banned, for example, I'm sure that some of them would have close shop. Yes, I'm a stranger too and you don't know my motives, but I'm advising you to do nothing for now. If you're that unsure, you really shouldn't move forward (in my opinion). This is not a medical emergency - it's ok to wait. For the record, the reason I'm adding my 2 cents is that I think someone needs to stand up for their fellow human being. This procedure has ruined my looks, my ability to enjoy food, my quality of life, and even partly my health. I believe the procedure is harmful, but I doubt that plastic surgeons will step up and do the right thing. On the contrary, many of them will probably fight to keep the procedure (in other words, keep their lifestyle). It's kind of understandable, but it's also unconscionable. Rosemary
I had Lipo on my inner/outer/anterior thighs a little over three months ago and I have not gained any weight. Don't let the scale fool you either because a month or two after surgery there is going to be swelling weight. I'm not speaking for everyone, but in general I believe that some people let loose a little after surgery about taking care of themselves. I think as long as you keep your routine of exercising daily and watching what you eat, you'll be fine. Just as long as you stay on track. That is what I have been doing. Lipo, is not the solution to keeping fat off permanently but it does help a lot for a head start! I don't regret my decision, for it has changed my body and confidence and given me all the more motivation to stay fit. Good luck to you! PS you can check out my pictures under my name Twilight79.
I had been the same weight since high school but developed some saddle bags as I got older. Had the surgery and was fine for a while. Started to gain weight and it was in places that you don't normally gain.
My advice is to wait until AFTER your done having kids.
Puma, might you be willing to elaborate on reasons to wait until after kids to have lipo? This is one of the main questions I have. My husband and I want to start a family in a few years but I don't necessarily want to wait that long for lipo. Any feedback you can provide is appreciated.
i also waited until i was done having kids to have lipo, the main reaosn being that your body changes ALOT when you go through a prgenancy and you have no way of knowing how you're going to change until you have gone through it.

Weight gain during pregnancy is inevitable. If you have fat cells sucked out of certain areas, when you do gain weight you won't be in proportion with the rest of your body.
For example, I had outer thighs done. I gained weight and now the areas that I did NOT have lipo stick out much further than where I did. Very indented.
I will tell you my experience but you probably won't like it. I had lipo in July of 2010..I had been wanting it for MANY years. I am normally thin on top but always had "saddlebags, fat knees, and chubby legs". I carried all my weight below my waist. I always dieted and exercised weighing from low 140's to low 150's and I am 5'8"..so I was not overweight. When I turned 51 and went through menapause I also devolped a thyroid conditon(I think my chronic dieting contributed to that). So I started to put on weight and no amount of dieting or exercising was helping. I went from a size 8 to a 10 and all my weight was going to my but, thighs, hips etc the usual places I looked deformed cause I was still thin on top. I decided to have lipo when I was 52.I thought "what the hell" if I can't diet it off maybe lipo can get rid of my saddlebags, hips, knees etc and I will look more propotioned. My dr. was a very reputable ps,he even has classes to teach other ps's about slimpo lipo..He took out 3700 cc's on me. At first I was pleased I could see immeadiate results and fit quite nicely in my size 10 pants. But I never got back down to a size 8 like he said I would. The first 6 months I looked pretty good, but never as good as he said I would look and believe me I watched what I ate and exercised like always. Slowly the pds started to come back on and to my horror I now am a size 12. I just had a mini revison last week to get rid of uneven pockets on my legs and to even out my hips(which were never even) this time he only took out 400 cc. Now I know I do have a thyroid conditon that is most definetly contributing to my weight gain, and I am seeing a dr and hopefully will get on the right meds soon(the meds im taking are not working),but i also wonder if I never had lipo would I still be a size 10? Is that also contributing to my weight gain? I don't know. If I had it to do over again I would not do it. Maybe if I was younger, after having children but before menapause I would do it,but for me it didn't achieve the results I desired, and yes a lot of the weight gain has gone to my arms, back, boobs and "flanks"..but also in the area's he did lipo (except not as much). Everyone is different some will achieve good results, but there are many like me who are not happy. And you really have to watch your diet and exercise just as much if not more than before the lipo.
The one thing to remember is that if you have a propensity to gain weight, and it seems to be coming on easily (menopause, thyroid, etc), then that won't change. You can get areas lipo'd, but you are still going to keep to gaining weight as you were. So, now you have less areas that the fat will accumulate in, so more fat will end up in those spots than prior. Or, of course, gaining in all new areas.
Now, whether that can be controlled is a different story (but no change from before surgery). I mean diet and exericise are important now as before.
So, it definitely will not keep you from gaining weight as you might have been doing prior to surgery.
Typically it won't go to your lipo spots, but on some it does. Doctors don't remove every fat cel in the area.
I have not had that happen, other than 2-3 lbs here and there. I do have to really watch my weight, and am able to control it. But, I know that after menopause no matter what I do, no matter how hard I work at it...it will not be the same. We lose muscle and gain fat. Our bodies "redistrubute" the fat/muscle and our ratios change. So, I do expect to see fat in areas I did not before, even with continued exercise and healthy diet.
I've had pretty much the same experience as "camelion" who posted on 5/10/11. To help get rid of fat from problem areas I had lipo on my belly area and also on my thighs. I looked great for about 2 years since I do exercise and watch my portions, try to eat healthy foods, etc. But then weight started coming back to my chest area and across my back where my bra strap goes and my upper arms. What to do? Do you go back and get lipo from those areas? But then where will the fat go next? Any suggestions?
