Side Note: Anyone Happy w/their BIRTH CONTROL PILL?

Postby nomorumplytummy » Sun Aug 30, 2009 12:03 pm

I have not been on the pill for the last decade and am so scared to get back on it for fear of weight gain and/or problematic skin but ever since kids and esp postSX the hormonal swings are getting to the point where they're almost unbearable (extreme bloating, headaches, severe cramps, mood swings, back aches...and now, post SX, gas pains!).

Is anyone happy with their pill? May I ask which one you're taking? I'm going to make an appt to see my Gynecologist soon and would love to know. I know everyone is different but am just curious what works for you since it's been such a long time since I've been on the pill. I used to take Triphasil which I don't even think is made anymore but I had no problems with it.

Many Thanks!!

YES! I am on Seasonale, and I love it! I only have 4 periods a year! I've been on it for several years, and I can't imagine life without it!

Good luck!

i was on the pill shorty after I had my daughter. Hated it. Opted for the copper IUD (Paraguard).
Since then, I have seriously suggested it or Mirena IUD(slightly hormonal) to anyone and everyone who ever asks.

Personally, I decided I did not want to use hormonal BC, as no matter what types Ive tried I hate the side effects. My OB said Mirena can stop periods completely, although most women still spot. I didnt want to spot either, as it always seems to happen at the worst times. I have a hard enough time tracking my periods. Obviously, Ive had no weight gain issues, no skin issues, migraines (big issue for me on BC)etc.
I was also told, if my cramping/bleeding became too uncomftorable it could be removed ASAP and switched for Mirena or another form of BC. My insurance would cover the costs of placement, the device, and removal/replacement if needed.

The copper IUD gave me the freedom of not worrying about a patch, pill, ring, shot. No side effects (my cramps are not worse, neither is my bleeding). However, my fiance complains about the strings randomly, but not often. I asked if he wanted me to switch types and he said it isnt bad enough to outweigh the way I feel.

Plus, now that Im planning a TT / BA I dont have any worry about BC raising my chances of a clot. Which to me is a big plus.

I have had the Mirena IUD for the last 2.5yrs. I love it. I have a period every 2 months or so. I don't usually keep track. But it is really just spotting. I could have it out since DH got the snip but I love that I don't have periods every month and how light they are with it.

I am 46, haad my sx at 43.....I was on depo shot from 93 until 05 when I had my tubes tied. While on depo I had NO period!!! Awesome!!! However, gyno sent me for bone scan in 05 saying that depo could cause loss of bpne density....sure enough my T scores in my thigh bones were slightly low, nothing that requred mds, but certainly made me say to hell with the deop shot!!!

I got a Mirena IUD......in May and love it!!!! Ever since I have had my tube tied I have had horrid periods, 7 full days of crime scene blood.....uuuggghhhh!!!

The first few months on Mirena they tell you that you will have irregeular periods....so, it has barely been 3-4 months, ans my periods my last 7 days they are nothing more than a nuasiance......pad if that, and mostly a needed waste.....I am hoping the next few months get even better. The total was $1900.00, I only had to pay $40 after insurance and it last 5 or 7 years (I forget!!)

My best to you

I am so happy to hear such good things about Mirena. Just two weeks ago I was at the Gyno and she gave me the pamphlet to look over. She did last year too but I put it off.

I "feel" so hormonal though, more than ever since the surgery. Is it okay to just start that up or should I wait til I feel more balanced? Or is this just how I am going to be now maybe? I mean, I am 45 so it wouldn't be surprising.

But I am planning on starting Mirena, so it is great to hear good things!

I hate the pill. I've never been able to take it without weight gain and mega bitchiness.

I opted to get the copper IUD (no hormones). I've got that now, but I also make dh wear a condom too. I'm extra careful since the the idea of tummy tuck entered the picture. Plus, it seems friends are popping up everywhere pregnant (using the pill or condoms). NO THANK YOU!

Dh is getting the big V in the next couple months. So, that should put an end to my paranoia.

LOL my DH has been getting the big V since 1990! He is always planning to call the doctor. He's terrified. My brothers got it and about all of our friends...

If I pressed it he would, but I don't want to press him so I never say anything.

It hasn't been a huge deal but looking back now it would have made life a bit easier if he had!

I miss the Today Sponge to tell you the truth. I loved that. Elaine knew what she was doing when she hoarded those before they stopped making them (Seinfeld).

I know! It was so easy. After that I went to a diaphram, but it was never the same. Harder to insert and then you have to deal with the spermicide stuff. The Sponge was wonderful and I don't know why they couldn't figure out a way to make it work. I heard a rumor a few years ago that it was coming back, but it never did.

I also heard that the Today Sponge was going to make a comeback and found this article online. Doesn't look like it's widely available.

I have been taking Yaz for a little over a year and LOVE it. I actually take it for PMDD and acne, not for birth control (my dh has a vasectomy). I have virtually NO PMDD symptoms and very clear skin. I might have put on a few pounds but it's a fair trade to me.

I LOVE the Paragard IUD. I had three weeks of bleeding every month from the Mirena, but I was one of those 2% or so who don't react well to the hormone. I didn't see anything in the literature about it, but when I finally complained enough to my GYN, she said "Oh, it's rare, but you are one of the ones who can't use it." (Took 9 months - nurse kept telling me that the bleeding was normal and to expect to be irregular for a few months!!!)

Bubbly, thanks for that link for the Today Sponge. Very interesting and I never knew that they stopped making it because the manufacturer went bankrupt! I thought there was something dangerous about the product.

Well, I would have been extremely thrilled a while back, but now I'm really excited about the IUD.

Just went to Walgreens tonight for some Premsyn because my ToM started 6 days early, and the Clerk, who I do talk to whenever I'm in there, just came out and told me she doesn't need PMS meds any longer becasue she's on the Mirena! She's almost 5 years in and loves it. One more indication I have got to give it a try.

jtg1740 - that's great the Paragard ended up working for you. That stinks you had to go through that for so long. Ugh.

Thanks, ladies, for your replies :D Gosh, I am the only one who's never tried the today sponge?! Hee hee.

I posted this on the lipo forum too and it sounds like lots of people are quite happy with the Mirena and YAZ! So, there really are NO side effects with the Mirena? Can I ask if you don't get your period, does that mean you don't get any of the symptoms that preceed the period (like the bloating, cramps, back pain, etc.) Have you all noticed a difference in swelling during that TOM when you used to have your period, post SX? Since there are no hormones does it not affect your sex drive? That seems to good to be true! Do you know how long it has been available? How do they insert it? Sorry I have SO MANY questions, like I said it's been a decade since I've been on the pill and have no clue about all these new things!! I'm pretty darn close to a contraceptive virgin, I guess

Am definitely going to sit down and talk with my GYN about my options and making me feel better. I thought everyone had these symptoms?! The only reason I'm doing something about it is b/c they seem to be getting worse every year and now after SX it's almost to the point where I feel like I have to stay in bed!!

bubbbly toes What is PMDD? I'm going to look it up but just thought I'd ask you all too...

Thank you again so much for letting me know what you all are taking, I really appreciate it and am glad you've found something that works for you!! jenroseleigh, I'm totally with you and figure after investing all this $$ to get as close to the old me as possible, the last thing I need is to get preggers!!

Healing Hugs,
NMRT

PS AnnieBS...let me know if the Premsyn helps, Midol usually does the trick for me but I've been taking it every 3 hours and it's only helping my headache not my back pain or stomach cramps...

jtg1740- Definitely glad you finally got the paragard...no fun to go through that for 9 mos!! I'm shaking my head just thinking about it...

wimpy1 - What are the side effects of Seasonale? Is it a shot or a patch? I've not heard too many people mention it on my post but it does sound familiar...[/b]

myturn07, WOW! That's awesome all you had to pay was $40, may I ask if you have a PPO plan? That's what I have. If that's my cost it would end up being much cheaper than even BC Pills!! May I ask if it is easy and painless to insert? What's involved and how long does it work for??!!

Many thanks!
