Coffee (caffeine) before surgery?

Coffee (caffeine) before surgery?

Postby vanillaskye » Tue May 01, 2007 8:34 am

I am a coffee drinker but like many the caffeine makes me hyper / anxious. I am reducing my intake right up to surgery.

Does any one believe that caffeine could interfere with the anesthesia?

Has anyone been advised to cut down on caffeine intake prior to surgery?

DOnt drink Anything Before Surgery because it causes you to choke , expecially after they instert the breathing tube. At least stay away from drinking 6 hours before surgery. ( and I heard this from the Doctor)

I drank a glass of water before surgery and they were really worried!

My PS told me to eliminate caffeine two weeks before surgery. HOWEVER, I'm a caffeine addict and didn't take the advice...I did stop all caffeine 48 hours before surgery. It didn't affect the anesthesia at all...but I did swell up like a balloon...don't know if that was related or not.

Yeah, I was told nothing, not even water after 12pm.
Mine is at 8:30am though so that shouldn't be too hard.
It's so you don't vomit while put under.

My surgery is in 2 weeks and I've been trying to cut caffeine out. It's so tough. I've been having the biggest headaches. I sure hope it'll stop soon. Did your doctor tell you when you could have caffeine again post-op?

The headaches go away after a few days. I was EXTREMELY irritable to everyone around me too....

At my one month checkup, my PS said I could now resume my normal life, including normal caffeine..

I had an open rhino though (supposed to be closed but cuz of tip issues, they switched to open during surgery) which means a tougher recovery period...

Thanks for the replies. Yah i do know you are not allowed to have anything after midnight on the day of surgery. My surgeon didn't advise me one way or the other on caffeine consumption but I am trying to cut back anyhow up till surgery which is in a week. I am drinking about 1.5 - 2 cups of coffee per day right now. And I hope to get this down to 1 cup a day by the day BEFORE surgery.

I'm like you. I can't cut out caffeine. I've limit myself to 1 cup a day. I don't know how I'll make it after the surgery when I can't have any. Hope you can get down to 1 cup a day before your surgery. Good luck!
