How long until I can breathe through my nose?

How long until I can breathe through my nose?

Postby amieee » Sat Jan 09, 2010 2:37 pm

I'm 10 days post op from rhinoplasty/septoplasty/turbinates reduced.

Everyone keeps saying I sound really nasal...when will this go away? Is this because of swelling or should I try to go back to my doctors office? Is there something wrong or is this normal 10 days post op. I read some old threads and there were people who could breathe as soon as they got the cast off! Will I ever be able to breathe well?

I can breathe a little bit, but it makes a whistling type noise as the air gets through, and I can't get enough air so I end up having to breathe through my mouth. That's what I had to do pre-op, I thought this surgery was supposed to improve it.

Edit: My nose has been completely cleaned out, and I've been using saline nasal spray a couple times a day.

Update: Around 20 days post op, and I can breathe better than before surgery! Patience is key!

Honestly, I was able to breathe immediately after my cast and splints were removed. Then a few days later I had a tough time breathing through my nostrils and wondered why. So I took a q-tip and very carefully cleaned inside as to not disturb any stitches. You know what it was that was blocking my nostril airways??? Sorry if it's TMI but it was very heavy, thick mucus, dried and hardened! I removed it with a wet q-tip and ahhhhh I was able to breathe perfectly!

Sounds like this is what is going on with you :D Hope this helped!

My breathing is still worse than before surgery, when I look into my nose I can see two circular shapes from the side of my nose blocking my nostrils. My guess is it's probably just swelling, you could probably just call into your doctors office just to be safe. I wouldn't be too worried about it yet, though. When I had my (bad) septoplasty, it took ages before I could breathe out my nose again.

I am almost 2 months post-op (had the same surgery as you, except it was a 2nd revision to correct a shitty initial surger followed by an even shittier revision i had with the same doctor). My breathing fluctuates; sometimes I can breathe ALMOST clearly, other times it's completely obstructed. My new doctor who operated on me told me that it is definitely swelling, but I know from my previous surgeries that i had raised scar tissue up the wazoo that even after almost a year, didn't go away. I still can't stick my finger up either of my nostrils, which is a sign of either extreme swelling or extreme scar tissue... my 3 month follow-up is in February so I'll let you know if my doctor has any developing advice/news.

I think you are right, it might just take longer with all the internal work he did too. I'm probably really swollen internally. My breathing is getting better day by day. I still sound congested when I talk, but it's a lot less "nasal" sounding. I got worried when I kept reading these threads that said people could breathe perfectly as soon as they got the cast off. I didn't think that they might have just had rhinoplasty, whereas I had septoplasty etc.

whoffleck, if your breathing is sometimes great and other times not, it might just be that your swelling is still varying. I've heard that swelling takes a long time to go away. It is definitely very frustrating though. Do you have allergies at all?

nope, i don't have any allergies, but it's also freezing here in nyc, so as soon as i step outside, my nose clogs up and i immediately get a runny nose.

Ah, yeah I get the runny nose every so often. My nose is still numb especially at the bottom, so i cant always feel it until it drips down, it's kinda gross. But all part of the process I guess.

I hope it gets better, or your doctor can at least tell you what it is and tell you when it will be better.

10 days post op is kind of early some noses just take time to function the nose tries to restore memory when you have surgery you really damage a lot of nerves. For myself I am 10 weeks post operation with revision keep in mind, and my breathing is no were I taught it should be. Every night I sleep almost one side of nose completely shut, keep in mind my nose for some reason has a lot of swelling and a lot of healing left to do, it has been really slow for me. I am for sure concerned because one of my focus going through revision was to be able to breathe again and I said to myself that improvement in restoring appearance of nose is not enough for me, I need to be able to breathe. Everymorning I wake up my nose is like a mushroom, it is sensitive to heat, certain foods, so in that respects I am becoming frustrated. But I have to wait for swelling to go away before I can judge it. :)
