Stitches opened?

Stitches opened?

Postby newnez » Wed Sep 09, 2009 8:20 am

I'm 5 days post-op and was cleaning my nose, I can't see where the stitches are inside my nostrils, but I've noticed that in one of my nostrils it looks like raw flesh (the one side where he did the most work). Does that mean my stitches have opened up? I don't feel any pain at all, even when i use the saline spray.
I did have to sneeze a few times after surgery (allergies), maybe that caused it?
I'm getting my cast and stitches removed tomorrow, so scared that he'll have to stitch me back up!

Oh man, I'm really starting to freak out, I sent him an email - it's tough because he's 6 hours drive from us. Every time I clean my nose now I wonder if I'm harming it. I don't even know if it is raw skin or if it's supposed to look like this post-op. All I know is that the other nostril doesn't look the same, so...
Has anyone else had this happen?

Dont panic - I definitely had that too - and still do about 5 weeks after. One side - inside my nostril looks very raw - but it never bled or anything. I think the work must be underneath the skin or something. Good you are seeing him tomorrow - but I think you're ok. Those stitches they put in are super strong - unlikely that they would come open. Maybe some are dissolvable and came out - that also can leave a raw part.

It may just be the surgeon's glue that came off? My PS used surgeon's glue over my stitches, it helps to prevent infection. While cleaning my nose (before having the cast removed) I accidentally removed some of the surgeon's glue and the sticthed area looked "raw". Like it looked red and very sensitive. I also couldn't feel any pain there though.

The surgeon's glue is meant to fall off on its own, so if that's what it is, I wouldn't worry too too much. It is good that you are seeing your Dr. soon though:-)

All the best!

I just saw him and got my cast off, he checked what I was asking about and said it's just swollen membrane in the nose and it's fine - to just keep applying polysporin on it, I was so worried that the stitches were not strong enough but they are pretty darn strong!! (I made a new thread about my cast off with pics!)
