Why does my new nose look great in the mirror and not photos

Why does my new nose look great in the mirror and not photos

Postby kam214 » Fri Jan 22, 2010 8:37 pm

Ok, I know I cannot be the only one with this weird phenomenon. I got my cast off a few days ago (revision rhino) and my nose looked great.......nostrils still different shapes from the side that was collapsed...but no one looks up my nose anyways.

Why is it that I look in the mirror and my nose looks better every day? I take a picture of it and it looks NOTHING like what I see in the mirror? And no....I am off the pain meds for a while new so I am not hallucinating, LOL.

Anyone else notice this???

Because photos are 2D and we live in a 4D world. Lighting is a big thing for photos too.

I agree with the above poster, but that may not be the only reason. I think it is b/c faces are not perfectly symmetrical. We are used to seeing our mirror image. Pictures show us as others see us. Since it is not what we are used to seeing, our eye focuses on what looks "wrong". Have you ever heard of a "true mirror" which flips your image? I saw one at a science museum. Nobody liked their image in it! They thought that they looked weird, not good. Perhaps the changing look to the nose following rhino exaggerates this phenomenon. You are probably looking in the mirror a lot, so your brain is familiar with your nose from the mirror image view.

I totally get what you are saying. It's like two different noses! In the mirror mine looks more defined, smaller. In close-up photos, it looks huge and more blobby. But then again, so does my face. Maybe the camera is distorting your image? My camera has a weird fish eye effect...to get a good picture, you actually have to stand far away and then use the zoom. Otherwise it's kind of distorted.

I think the blob-look or widening of noses in photos is more about lighting. Even pre-rhino, there some picts my nose looked fine - with the right light, angle etc. - but mostly it look bad! LOL

I am right with you! I thought the same thing! I almost do not want to take a picture:( I do not understand that about this is the way we really look? I do understand lighting...
How is it that we do not really see what we look like when we look in the mirror? Wow, if my nose looks ugly, fat and lop sided maybe I never want to see a picture! When I am in my car and look into the mirror it looks pretty good? Wow, but it really does not? :( I am depressed! :(

WOW! Thanks for posting this. I feel the same exact way!! I still hate having my pic taken because my nose looks nothing like that in person. However, I just had professional pics taken w/ the family for X-Mas cards and I told the photographer ahead of time and she got my best angles. You are not the only one!! =)

Me too!! I had my nose done on 8th October and when I look in the mirror I LOVE my nose (athough there is still a bit of swelling) but in photos my nose is unrecognisable. I knew this would happen but of course I'm not very happy, to say the least.

If like another poster has said that, we really look how we look in pictures, then I must say I am ugly as heck now! I hate RHINOPLASTY with all MY GUTS! (THIS surgery can be beneficial but at the same time be a very very very extremely detrimental procedure if not done properly, which unfortunately was my case) and I WISH TO GOD that I NEVER EVER EVER IN MY WHOLE freaking LIFE TOUCHED MY NOSE. I WISH I COULD BE REBORN AGAIN AND BE GIVEN ANOTHER OPPORTUNITY to have AVOIDED THIS BIG MISTAKE. My natural nose WASNT THE MOST BEATIFUL NOSE BUT IT FIT MY FACE and complemented my face perfectly, and on top of that gave me an exotic look overall. NOW what I have sitting on my face is a "generic" nose that has been operated and revised many times (5) that it looks nothing like it used to and SADLY NEVER WILL. NOW I LOOK BELOW AVERAGE. I came to terms with it. I went from a pretty girl to an extremely UGLY girl now because of a nose job/s, and IM A GIRL!!!!! I already gave up on the idea of having a normal life so I came to terms with it. Its like having cancer, you have to learn to live with it and accept because there is no cure and no solution and Im talking from experience because I've already had enough revisions done 6. Once a nose is touched/botched/not good its game over, cannot undo it. Pictures for me FORGET IT ABOUT IT!!! my nose distorts everything that was once harmonious in my face. AND I REALLY REALLY DO LOOK VERY VERY UGLY in pictures, maybe not too much ugly in the mirror BUT PICTURES!!!!!!!!!!! I look like an Alien!!!!!!

"mel14" I know how you feel, did you get your bones broken each time? Because that makes the temples cave in more once you get a sec revision, that is what im suffering and the eyes go back more in the head... I so regret it myself...

Hey Shadedtone,

You know actually you are right. I did have my bones broken recently and yes it looks freaking weird!!!!! i dont know there is something off with it..... I'm sure you know what i mean. I went to supposely very best revisionists doctors inthe U.S. as I've been told by another good doctor out there,,,,, unfortunately, I think rhinoplasty even until today is very limited, meaning that there arent many, no I should there is "vaguely" any option out there to undo the damage of a bad nose job or to "fully" correct a nose job that has been very damaged and restore it, its nearly impossible. I've been to all the doctors you can think of, including Dr. Menick, and basically all have told me that my nose has been very damaged, the structure, the carliage, the skin, EVERYTHING! that there isnt much that can be done and if attempted would be extremely risky. Unfortunately that is the truth, and its pretty hurtful and it sucks because I have to accept the reality of it. I hope that in the future, there are more developments in perfecting rhinplasty procedures and that this procedure should only be left at the hands of Facial Plastic Surgeons who specialize in this. Otherwise there will still be that invariable number of more unhappy/semi-satisfied patients than Happy/extremely happy ones (who are the very very very very lucky few). And i also hope that there will more developments, cartilage regeneration to help those with bad nose jobs and even cancer patients who've suffered trauma in their nose to restore their nose as close as to how it used to be, you know mice that grow ears, maybe mice that grow nose cartilage ;). I might start studying about skin cell/cartilage regeneration when I go back to school......hopefully I will do well in my science classes....Sorry about hearing your story I know how hard it is to live with something, and look at your face and dread everyday of has happened....i understand and is not something easy to handle. Let me know if you find any info out there......Mel.
