Bromelain effectiveness

Postby LizV » Sat Sep 27, 2008 4:29 pm

I had a TT with MR recently and just started taking Bromelain yesterday (500mg vcaps) to help with swelling. The instructions say 1 capsule with or between meals.

- Is bromelain really effective to prevent/decrease swelling?
- Is it more effective between meals as opposed to with meals?
- Is 3 per day enough?

My swelling this morning was worse than yesterday, so I don't think it's helped at all so far. Seems to have made me worse for now. Just wanted to know if it's worth continuing.

No, Liz......it won't make you worse. The only side effect I have ever heard of was a slight stomach upset at higher doses. If that occurs, simply drop the dose a bit and ease it back up. Sounds as though you're just not taking enought of it. :?

Here's a post I made a while back. Hope you find it helpful!

From what I've heard, it's used as a digestive aid if you take it WITH meals, but it is more effective for decreasing swelling when you take it BEFORE or on an EMPTY stomach. I suppose that the amount you need to take for effectiveness will depend on the brand you buy.

Hello Liz,

Mapleblondie is right about that. Bromelain can also be used as a digestive aid, so you want to take it three time per day on an empty stomach. The optimal dosage for anti-inflammatory purposes is 1500mg/day so you are set on the dosage. Please let me know if you have any further questions and I will be happy to help!
