DRAIN AMOUNT?

DRAIN AMOUNT?

Postby tangles » Tue Apr 13, 2010 7:35 am

so i have one drain. ps said it stays in for 2 weeks. was very surprised to see how large the bulb on it is!! no hideing this puppy!! question is i sometimes wonder if it is even working. i hardly have anything in it. from 7:30 pm to 7:30am last night only 7.5cc ! it really doesn't bother me, but it seems like a long time to have it in when hardly anything is draining into it!

I think a large part of when they take it out is not only the amount, but the color. the less blood in it (meaning the fluid is very light pink or almost clear) the better.

I too questioned if my drains were working. My first got removed 2 days P.O. And was putting about 20cc a day. My other one, which is getting taken out thursday, put out 20cc all wknd and is now less than 10 in a 24 hr period. My fluid is not completely clear tho, more of an orange color.

It should be kind of the color of ginger ale (minus the bubbles :) )
Tangles - are you going to see your doc before these two weeks are up? If so, he may take it out earlier (I would think)

Tangles, I kept 1 for a week and the other one came out 5 days later. I was starting work and I called to see if they would take it out 2 days early and b/c I was only draining less than 10ccs in 24 hours they did.
So Good Luck! Maybe the'll take it out.

I only had 1 drain for my FTT and it was only in for 5 days. Over the 5 days I think I emptied it about every 8 hours (not because it was full, just when I was up and moving around). On avg I only had about 20cc at a time and about 3-4 days into recovery it started to turn a brownish orange. I had my drain removed on Sunday.

I had only one drain also. I changed my about two times a day every time it got up to 50cc. You should check it to see if it is blocked probably is not letting the fluid go threw..Good luck..

My drains come out tomorrow or Monday. One is hardly draining anything but the other is still draining a little but it is still a little red. Does comfort level go up a ton when you get them out?

My comfort level went up A LOT when they got taken out. My PS would not take them both out on the same day even if they were both low in ccs. This is because usually the one that snakes up higher in your ab will be low first which makes sense cuz of gravity. After they remove that one, they wait and see how much the one that is lower in your ab, collects. The amount in the "low" one will sometime increase in output after the "high" one is removed cuz that fluid is now being collected in the low one.

Dang...I had 2 drains and at the end I was putting out close to 40cc in 24 hours in one and the other was almost none. I guess I just had a lot of fluid, because we were emptying them on a regular basis at least 3 to 5 times a day. Towards the end it was only twice a day, but the color (after cleaning out the clogs) was yellow/orange.

The fluid he took out of my breasts the other day was dark...I'm hoping that is going to be gone. Was scary when I poked it and heard fluid sloshing around. :-&

Hopefully you get yours out today along with the catheter!:) Good Luck!

Badknee, thanks, I will look forward to getting them out and feeling better. The nurse called back and I have to wait for Monday as well.

Tangles, sorry you are not sleeping. Hang in there.
