Drinking Alcohol and Swelling

Drinking Alcohol and Swelling

Postby susanandsons » Mon Sep 15, 2008 1:29 pm

Hi everyone~
Do you think drinking alcohol, whether it's beer, wine or hard liquor makes you swell more? Or any other adverse effects since sx?
Has anyone stayed away from drinking since having sx or is anyone back to enjoying happy hours?
I would love to hear opinions on this, how its affected you, even weight gain from drinking? Thanks so much!

BTW, I posted a couple more pictures

Hi Susan!

I had a hard time enjoying it for awile after SX. It took me about 6 weeks before I could get it down. :) I'm not sure why but, it sounded good in my head but my body didn't want it. It just didn't taste good.

Anyway, I never had any swelling after my TT so I can't respond to that question however, beer just makes you blote TT or not!

I am back to enjoying a night out here and there or some wine with dinner but nothing out of hand. I'm doing just fine. I keep losing and gaining the same few pounds and it's really pissing me off but, in the end........... it's my own fault! I know I gain when I drink and I lose when I don't. Always have.

I asked my PS if it was okay to comsume on ANY level before or after SX. Of course I got the whole...... "It's not good for you at any point" speach but he did say that it was okay to drink before or after SX that it doesn't do any harm however, he also pointed out that you should take good care of your body so you can heal propoerly and that doesn't include drinking. I agreed fully and had maybe 2 drinks 3 weekes before SX and tried to have one maybe 2 weeks PO. No go. 6 weeks later it tasted SO much better! So now i'm back to normal and consume here and there but still make sure to eat well and take my vitimins and so forth.

I must think I'm good to go................. My next SX is scheduled for the 23rd! HA!!!!!!!!!!!!!

M.O.D.E.R.A.T.I.O.N.

Your good to go!

I've had some experience with alcohol as of lately. :D

I swell like a madwoman, no matter what kind of alcohol I drink.
The other weird side effect I have is that my scars, both the circle around my BB, and my incision turn BRIGHT red. It's actually quite funny to look at.

Alcohol causes an inflammatory response in the body - can cause or exacerbate swelling in some.

I am a wine drinker with a rare cocktail thrown in. We have champagne nearly every night before dinner. Often we have a glass or two of wine with our meal. We also do wine tastings on the weekends or during the week. (Like tonight :D )
Yes I have swollen up a lot of times. I drink about 60 oz of water a day, a glass of Gatorade and a glass of cranberry juice all of which I think helps with it.
I find now, 11 weeks PO, that it is usually better. I can have a drink and have a nice evening.

I swell when I drink, but it happens on the next day not the same day I am drinking.

Thank you everyone for letting me know how it affects you. I know everyone responds different. I am just trying to figure out if that's the reason I tend to swell more.
I am also stable with my weight right now and I really want to lose a couple more pounds. Don't know if it's been the casual glass of wine/champagne here and there. I haven't started exercising yet, because when I walk my lower back kills me and swells horrendously.

TO TRUANT ~ Go out and have a great time this weekend!

i don't notice swelling from my rum and diet cokes or beer. i stay away from margaritas as they are high in salt. i do care about the calories so i have been drinking MGD LITE. It's only 64 calories and doesn't taste bad at all.

I swell more from eating chips, Greek olives or other salty foods.

Hi I swell really bad when I drink. Usually the day after also. Funny after reading this I looked at my scars and you are right they are redder then before I went out last night for my sisters bday. I really did put away the drinks. I am paying for it tonight swelled and when I swell it hurts.

doesnt the rush of swelling usually go down pretty quickly as opposed to the regular everyday swelling that remains from post op?

My husband and I are big wine drinkers and have a glass or two every night with dinner and I have found very little difference for me in regards to swelling. 6 weeks PO and swell regardless. But like the other post said, moderation...

drinking alcohol and swelling

Postby crazy1 » Wed Sep 17, 2008 1:20 am

Champagne really make me swell up and bloated, but PATRON(the silver kind) does not make me swell, it actually helps i guess cause the next day i would be really flat, thats not all, i drink a mixer of stuff though like remy martin, Hennessey my brand of beer is Heineken. i do this every weekend now, I drink until i got drunk, no damages though.
