Hot Flashes After Surgery From Mommy Makeover

Hot Flashes After Surgery From Mommy Makeover

Postby skirat201 » Tue Jun 15, 2010 3:48 pm

OMG I've been having hot flashes since just hours after my surgery involving a tummy tuck, breast lift, and lipo I thought I was nuts but it apparently does happen to some including myself. My face and body is extreamly hot but my feet stay cold, I don't get it. Does the type of surgery that I had mess with my body's ability to regulate it's temperature? Is it a side effect from the general anesthesia? Did the surgery alter my hormones, I mean this is getting annoying waking up having to have a ice cold wash cloth on my face to feel better and cool off.
I found another thread in a breast reduction forum. I had a tummy tuck, breast lift, and lipo. I have very dense breast tissue but not a whole lot of tissue removed to do the lift but regardless I'm getting these hot flashes and I mean like I feel like I'm going to spontaneously combust or something. I thought I was just maybe over doing it but not the case it seems. Anyone else experience this? Please help!

I'm trying to remember how long they lasted for me...a week or two? And I can't tell you what it was from either exactly. Hormone craziness? Drugs, the surgery itself?
I had cold packs and cool washclothes for my face, head and neck. Could have used a fan! I wish I had got this gift of a warming type pad that you put in the microwave earlier than I did. It is made of cloth and has barley and lavendar in it. Warm it up and put on the feet. It was heaven! I kept thinking, why am I so hot above the shoulders and so cold at the feet! Drove me a bit crazy. It does go away though! The cold feet stuck around for some time though. But the warming pack helps so much and is comforting. Especially since I can't have a hot bath yet.

I know, right?! I've had the exact same thing since my surgery and it's been two weeks, now. I don't think it's as bad as it was a few days ago, though. I was afraid that I had some sort of infection and was running a fever but every time I checked my temperature, it was fine. If someone knows what causes this, I would be very interested to hear about it. I never researched it and totally forgot to ask my doctor about it. I thought I was going a little crazy! ;)

Well it's nice to see I'm not alone here. My doc seemed to dismiss the issue in the hospital but I'll see him friday to get my drains out and I'll ask him about it then. I can't believe all of us have experienced this and the physicians don't know the cause. Man it sucks so bad, the hot flashes will wake me from a deep sleep feel like I'm gonna set my recliner on fire.

No doubt. I've woken myself up from sleep because of terrible hot sweats. I'll kick the covers back and the next thing I know, I'm freezing. So weird. Have either one of you girls been anemic before or do you know if you were near anemic before your surgery? I know that my blood-tests always come back near-anemic and when I last saw my PS, he thought that I looked pretty severely anemic (I guess that can happen after surgery even without blood-loss) and I needed to get some iron supplements in me. I know that anemia can make you feel hot/cold at inappropriate times. I'm no doctor but maybe we're all anemic? Wouldn't hurt to take some multi-vitamins, anyway.

WellI, I'm 45 and premenopausal, I might get 3 periods a year if I'm lucky. Menopause is different for everybody and doesn't necessarily mean because one person has certain symptoms that you will have the same. I KNOW what a hot flash and nights sweats feel like for me and these are NOT those! Much much worse. My blood work came back fine for anemia so I don't think it is that. I'm thinking a connection between hormones and breast tissue manipulation is the culprit. Like I said I'll ask the doc on friday.

I had them too but my hormones were completely wacky for a few months after surgery. This surgery really messed with my hormones. I didn't have them continually, but that first month I would have 2-3 a day for many days.

I am 46 now and just started experiencing hot flashes which I attribute to pre-menopause. Started just a few months ago, over a year out from my surgery.

My current hot flashes feel very much like those I had after surgery, and since it is a hormonal issue now and that's what I experienced back then, in my case that would make sense. Maybe the hormonal fluctuations that occur for some of us just cause more or make them more intense?

It is interesting to me that as common as this hot flash side effect seems to be, you don't hear anything about it from the surgeon. I would have felt alot better when I got the first one in the hospital knowing what it was than thinking it was a drug reaction or something worse. Nobody could or would give me any answers. I had to take xanax to get me thru the first few days of the hot flashes,

Oh thank GOD I found this! Im sitting here sweating my butt off with a fan directly blowing at me as I sit here shivering internally! Weirdest thing ever! Not to mention insanely annoying! I am 8 days post op( FTT w/MR lipo).. and will wake up sweating and just plain freaking out Im so hot!! No more than 4 minutes later, I start to get shivers under my CG garment, then will move into my arms and then my legs.. FREEZING! I cant seem to find a good middle ground for body temp! I do however have a fever since surgery do to infection... but Ive had hot/cold flashes from fevers before, these ARE NOTHING like this!!

I just hope I can get back to some sense of normalcy soon! If my poor DH has to hear, turn the fan on, turn it off one more time, I think he might commit me!

Isn't always nice to know that you're not alone? That's why I love it here. If you have any questions or concerns, don't be afraid to start a thread. The ladies here are so sweet and supportive. I don't know what I would have done without them.

BTW, your before and after pictures are incredible! You must be super excited with your results. :)

:D Wow I thought it was just me.. I also asked my PS and he dismissed it. I am putting fan on high one second to grabbing a quilt. No fever so I just thought a hot flash. I am only 40 but I think I had a few before. Ok we are normal...
