The Lymphatic System, Massage, and Heathly Tissues

The Lymphatic System, Massage, and Heathly Tissues

Postby Dr.JLo » Sun May 30, 2010 9:36 am

Dysfunction of the lymphatic system after tummy tuck is largely responsible for the dreaded "swell hell" many patients experience. It never gets much credit, but just like blood flow that keeps tissues alive by supplying oxygen and nutrients, the lymphatic system is critical because it removes toxins and wastes while also supplying the tissues with important infection-fighting immune cells.

It has it's own "heart", vessels, and special "processing centers" (lymph nodes) where bacteria, viruses, and even cancer cells are stopped, interrogated, and destroyed by the immune sytem.

Think of it like a combo garbage man/cleaning lady. Not a particularly glamorous job, but you sure will complain if they don't come to work for a week. And you really won't like the way your house looks !

Part of the way the system circulates around the body is by the contractions of the muscles. So massage (and especially lymphatic massage) helps circulate the fluid, clear waste, and may boost the immune system.

Thanks for posting this! Just had my first lymphatic massage last week and have a second scheduled for this coming week. Wasn't sure it was doing anything so your post was very helpful!

What are thoughts on getting most from this form of treatment
Is there a general rule or maintenance schedule that should be guide lymphatic massage.
How many weeks post op to start? Is weekly a good idea, bi-weekly or less frequent to get the most benefit from the treatments.

Dr. JLo,

In your opinion, how long do you think it takes the lymphatic system to repair/heal itself? I haven't had lymphatic massages but I have had normal massages and that seems to help with the swelling as well. My PS never mentioned the lymphatic system to me at all.....just that I could swell for up to a year.

Lymph problems after 8 months & ankle swelling

Postby 61young » Sat Jun 05, 2010 4:42 pm

After a FTT in September 09, cosmetic results are great, healed with no infection. HOWEVER, even with weekly lymph drainage, excellent diet and activity, stubbon swelling in lower abd. Whenever I fly, swollen ankles and even water on the knees. Ankle swelling very resistent and seems to be getting more frequent. My PS says it might take up to 2 years for lymph drainage to be more normal. Any advice on how to handle this? Thanks.
Blessings to all. Darlene

I have two questions;

1st do these massage techniques also help with recovery from Liposuction? I got my flanks done in early June and still experiencing swelling.

2nd would I get this done by my PS or at the same center, since they know what is going on or is this an outsourced thing? Their link is below if that can help with answering.

Thanks :D
