Weaning off the recliner?

Weaning off the recliner?

Postby plady » Sat Nov 21, 2009 3:35 pm

I have developed a serious love/hate relationship with this recliner!! I really want to give it up and return it to the in-laws (we borrowed theirs), but it has become my security, well, chair.

I slept one night in bed with the wedge pillow under my torso and that killed my back but I think we can do some more tweaking to figure that out. What I am really wondering about is where do you hang out during the day without the recliner? I am so used to being on my feet and chasing kids that I am really having a hard time figuring out some kind of middle ground as I transition back. Currently I can't go more that an hour or so on my feet before I'm dizzy so I need some sort of plan. Do you stroll around the house and then nap in the bed? I am feeling so lost and un-smart about all of this, lol! Any tips or advice appreciated!

Well, make a 2 week mark and dump it. I know you're only a few days out, but the sooner you can get back to your normal sleeping habits(permitting), the better. I kind of made myself lay close to flat at 2 weeks.

I stayed in the recliner for almost three weeks. I tried to go back to bed earlier but couldn't get comfortable sitting up in the bed. I've stayed in the recliner this week as well after my BA. I did sleep in the bed sitting up this morning for the first time. No need to rush out of it. Do it slowly and be comfortable.

I am 11 days post op and have only NOT slept in the recliner for a few hours at a time. One night I attempted to sleep on the couch (with lots of pillows) and only lasted about 4 hours. I was able to sleep in my bed (only pillows under my head and knees) for maybe 3 hours one night. However, I was in severe pain (mostly back pain) when I woke up and decided that I wasn't going to push it anymore!
Take your time and try short naps elsewhere, slowly make your way out of the recliner.

Good luck!

I lived in my recliner for 3-4 weeks! My sweet DH stayed on the couch the whole time, refusing to go to our bed without me....how sweet huh??

My last drain came out at day 14, so no way was I going to take the chance of yanking on it in bed!! Plus I am a tummy sleeper and being in the recliner kept me in one position!! And the fact that my bed is pretty high and I am vertically challenged!!

I don't think it is a matter of weaning, just stay there for as long as you feel comfortable!

Hey that's our situation too! :) Last night, we traded and I slept flat on my back all night on the couch and him in the recliner. Yay me! LOL I only woke up once in the middle of the night. I had to call out for DH because I couldn't get up on my own (much easier to get out a recliner.) But afterwards, I returned back to the couch and slept there the remainder of the night. I think I may venture back to my bed tonight.

That is so sweet that your husbands are camping out on couches with you! I made it back into the bed last night to find that my hubby fell in love with my pillow and has stolen it, lol!

So I made it through the night in bed and was comfortable enough but had wicked insomnia. I also found a way to sit on the couch with dh to watch a movie and it was nice to be closer to him. Yay for progress! Although I am sitting in the recliner again now. Baby steps, right?

I slept in my rented recliner for 3 weeks....."Everyone" recovers differently and is able to sleep in there beds at different times in there recovery. Don't worry about when the others were able to get into there beds to sleep hun, if you need to sleep in the recliner because it is comfortable & better then the bed then sleep in your recliner! I also tried the wedge in my bed and I couldn't do it either it was just so uncomfortable that I slept in my recliner for another week. No need to rush it.....do what works for you and if you sleep better in the recliner then enjoy that sleep
Take Care... wishing you a speedy recovery and welcome to the flatlands!
