Weight gain after Tummy tuck???

Weight gain after Tummy tuck???

Postby tizzie » Sat Oct 18, 2008 4:58 pm

I had my tummy tuck last summer, what I don'tunderstand is after that after the surgery I weighted more. Certainly swelling but then it sort of stayed...then this past spring I blew up like a balloon on a cruise, lost most of that but not all of it, its like when I swell up, some of it turns to fat??? is that possible?
I have gained in less than 6 months more than 20% of my original body wieght.
They are doing blood work now but to top it off I am starting to go thru menopause, and I am taking hormone replacements.
Did anyone else gain unexplained weight after surgery?
Thanks as always for your help! :?: :(

I too had those same problems. I too am starting to go through menopause at 36. But I had a partial hysto a few years ago so....

I wonder if going under or even lipo can affect your hormone balance. Not sure but I've heard this from others so I think there may be someting to that.

I think my surgery triggered menopause (or worsened symptoms) and yes my weight has been an absolute battle since my TT! I know all the rules but geeze it's soooo hard to keep it under control!
I'm up about five pounds and it feels like fifteen! I have low thyroid function as well. Think I should have gone for jaw wiring as well as this gorgeous TT.........................

I gained weight too but thats because i was in a car accident 2 months after and II think I went back to work too soon. I also am emotional eater. Now I am happ to say I am back to post surgery weight. To get there I have to eat healthy and exercise my ass off. I am going through menoupase too for the past 3 years, sometimes my period doesnt come for 3 months or more and I have hot flashes I need a towel to wipe down. I gotta tell ou though my doc put me on prozac as I was suffering with post car accident pain and she felt my body was stressed and depressed even though I am a happy person. It helped with my pain and I could exercise again. wwoooohhhhhooo

Well this is good news/bad news! Good news I'm not going crayz, bad news its real and its happening. And from what I have read menapause causes our bodies to change, and once again its good news/bad news my breasts have gotten huge I went from barely a B to a full C and they look perky and beautiful and I had nothing done to them just mother nature! However they are testing me for hpyo thryroid and my sister says (she has it) if it is that that I should almost immediately lose about 10 pounds, bad news is you know where I'm going to lose it!
But, also it may help me feel better I have almost every symptom of hypothyroidism, and I think the onset of menopause is causing it. Day 4 of HRT I can tell you I don't know if my insurance covers it or not but its making me feel really even and I'm sleeping better but I still have the thryroid symptoms. But also the weight is a definite issue since I am in the very early numbers of obesity. and even if I do not eat anything like I literally stop eating everything and fast I don't lose and sometimes even gain more! My feet and hands are swollen too my feet had shrunk down to a size 6 1/2 -7 now im 7 1/2 to 8, rings that used to fit no longer fit. And my face is swollen too, again its good news bad news, the swelling has lessened my wrinkles and I actually look better! than my thin face from before but its not right....
I find out tomorrow about my thyroid blood work, and some other stuff.
The timeline was pre-menopause 108-112 quit smoking went to 115..had tummy tuck went to 123 adn then after the swelling 118-121 went on a cruise and swelled up to 146 came home and in a few days went to 125 now I'm at 132 and can't go any lower despite fasting and the use of prescription fluid pills.

Ladies.

I definitely know that our fat contains the hormone estrogen. It is possible if you have lipo or fat removed that it can bring on menopause, they are removing estrogen from the body. I was in the same boat, and because they lipo on abs or flank areas, that will make boobs bigger. It triggers a hormone that makes it bigger. (Not for everybody)

2 Years ago I had lipo of my flanks and +-4 months later went into menopause. I started HRT and now I am fine again. I stopped using HRT, have no hot flushes and started my period again. I am 44 years old. Seems it does get better again, or maybe I was just lucky.

Yes, taking fat from the body influence our hormones.

funny you should mention. I went from a small a cup (before sx) to now a full B. I'm not complaining and it wasn't overnight. It took a year for my breasts to grow but yeah I got that interesting side effect as well.

As for my weight...hmmm I'm 5 feet 1 1/2 inches and have always been about 110-115. Was 112 before sx. Went up to about 120 when I was super swolen (hands, feet, face etc just like you had to take my rings off for a few months) and now am about 125. HOWEVER at 125 I feel good. My rings are not too snug and my feet are not swollen. So I just don't get it. I may have gained some muscle but 20 pounds of it? Sounds a bit much. I'm just as confused as ever now..............

This is VERY interesting that this has happened to more than just me! My eating habits have been the same and almost to the point of being somewhat of a eating disorder but not really, Im certainly not bulimic or anorexic but, nothing has changed, I'm still eating way less than most people, and I have done it all my life its not like I'm trying to starve myself or anything. So some weight gain I expected I quit smoking and now I'm at that "special" time of my life! haha...if this is special I'm not looking forward to "bad" LOL but i quit smoking pre tummy tuck, it actually helped me quit, it was the carrot for me for quitting.
So tomorrow I wil find out if its my thyroid, if its' not well I guess I can fast for days and start exercising twice a day, or....accept my new size ):
But I love my new boobs!!! I'm short and voluptuous...hahahaha...

Thanks goodness for this post! I've been so frustrated with my weight gain since surgery. I've been eating normal and very healthfully, and I work out about 3 times a week. Even with that, I can't even maintain my weight! I'm now 6 pounds more than my pre-op weight, and on a 5'2" frame that's a LOT.

Unfortunately my fat has redistributed itself from my abdomen/flanks to my face, arms, and bust. Normally the bust part wouldn't worry me if I hadn't just gotten a BA too! And having the extra fat in my face and arms is so frustrating. I even do strength training and my arms still look really big. I guess you have to be careful what you ask for.

It's a little reassuring that I"m not the only one going through this, but at the same time it makes me wonder what all of that pain and suffering was for. Sure it's nice to have a flat stomach, but now my face is fat and that's the first thing you see! Plus my boobs are way too big now. (sigh)

Oh man, yeah. I am up about 14 lbs. Fortunately I am five foot nine with a big frame but still... It is showing in my face and upper arms and my jeans are all really tight. I can't even wear a couple of pairs I could wear pre-op. There is now no muffin top but sheesh. Could it still be swelling six months out? It is depressing to be sure. Still, I was feeling really fat and I looked at my pictures right after sx and looked at myself in the mirror, my tummy still looks great. I seriously HAVE to lose weight though.

I am so grateful I came upon this. I had my TT about 18 months ago, and over the course of the following year, I must have gained over 10 pounds. I don't even know, because I am scared to get on the scale. I did not start menopause, but my periods definitely changed, got heavier, etc. By breasts got bigger, and most of the weight went to my thighs and hips. I stopped smoking, so that may have something to do with it also. I cannot take this weight off....I have tried everything. Anyone else been successful?

Hi,
i started this post a long time ago...so that people are not freaked out, the end result was......
the swelling was actually caused by my use of ibuprofen, my thyroid was and is still fine, i had some health issues from using fluid pills and not getting the RX for potassium.
So in the end did my tummy tuck cause weight gain, probably not but it certainly changed my body and where fat now accumulates. Which is not all bad it does go to my breasts and hips and thighs but thats ok with me!
it also did not cause me to go into early menopause i am actually now done with menopause. so its all ok!!!! and i don't ever regret having my TT! I am considering some lipo this year though but who knows. Im actually very happy with my body :) My normal post menopausal weight is now right around 121.
