what should you eat the day before surgery?

what should you eat the day before surgery?

Postby chilipepper » Fri May 12, 2006 6:39 am

I wondered what I should eat for the days before surgery to PREVENT constipation after surgery? The last time I had surgery (a hysterectomy) I swelled up horribly for 3 days!!!! It was the most uncomfortable thing in the world, 50 times worse than the incision pain.

One PS told me to "eat nothing but pasta for the 3 days before surgery." Has anyone ever heard of this?
Thanks!

Hmmmmmm ...never heard of that. At least he chose a tasty food!

Since you take a fleet enema the night before surgery, you are pretty cleaned out anyway.

Still, I was constipated until 3 or 4 days after surgery and yes, that is awful! I think it is one of the evils of anesthesia???

I went with carbs and protein and tons of water the day before - went to the bathroom the morning of the surgery thankfully. Now 2 weeks post-op and still taking a softener.

Good luck!

I personally think I tried to eat everything in sight because i knew i wouldnt feel up to it for a few days after. I think a regular diet is fine as long as you are regular. if not, just add a little fiber. Also not everyone is prescribed an enema before surgery. I was not. I got lucky and had no problems after either. Had a horrible time with constipation after c-sections, and was really worried about it. I think I lived on Salads and things like that the first few days after and i swear my first movement came within 20 mins of eating the salad. I know TMI right? well good luck to you, hope all goes well.

I have IBS and decided to put myself on liquids only the day before (slim fast, soups, etc). I too drank tons of water. Started taking stool softener right after surgery and started going to the bathroon about 3 days after - wasn't bloated though - yea!

I had only soft stuff - milkshakes, Jamba Juice, soup, etc & took Citrucil tablets every day to keep from getting constipated. Worked great. Figured why have all that clutter in there while they're trying to work on you.

Chilipepper,
I am one of those people who goes once maybe twice a week normally. 10 days before surgery I drank lots of water and was on a vitimin program. My PS didn't recommend a enema before surgery. After surgery I contined my vitimins and drinking lots of water. I had no problem at all...I have gone twice since surgery without a problem!

I have heard....WATER! WATER! WATER! Fruits! and Protein!

I posted on another thread that I was going to try the Nutri System meals. They are designed for weight loss, fully prepared, and delivered to the door. They are very small in portions. Healthy snacks are included. My dh does not cook, so I had asked if anyone else has had them, but so far, no one has responded. I will let you know if they are appropriate. My surgery is Wed and they are arriving Thursday.

I was actually thinking of going liquid-diet for a couple days before, like slim-fast shakes, ensure, or some sort of protein shakes. Any opinions for or against this?

Did your dr not give you instructions for the day before?!?! I think I would call and ask about it. They each have their own "system", not something you want to plan out on your own!!

My liquid diet, along with other directions, came directly from the dr!!!

Good Luck!!

Nope, no day-before instructions, just not to eat anything after midnight.

Awwww come on....chili dogs, french fries and a big thick mocha shake!!!
You won't want anything good for weeks...and if you start with a stool softener 2 days prior to surgery and take them for another week after you'll be fine.... EAT WHAT YOU WANT!!!!!...lol :D 8)
