advice from ladies who have had labiaplasty please!!!

Postby _chirpy_chick_ » Wed Mar 17, 2010 5:56 pm

Hi I would really like to speak to ladies that have had labiaplasty please..
heres my story.. was booked in for labia reduction and backed out right at last min.. actually walked out of theater!! (I know stupid) this was two days ago got scared of possible side effects because my mom found out I was going to have it done (im aged 22) and she really tried hard to persuade me not to have it done and was also upset and crying over me having it done! so felt under a lot of pressure and was unsure of right thing to do, and just felt really mixed up over it. I have lost my money as well that I couldnt really afford anyway which I am not upset about with nothing to show for it :(.. but my mom keeps telling me I have made right decision but dont know what to think anymore as she is against all types of plastic surgery and I dont know if I should have listened to her or not.
My minora labia protude around 1cm down from my majora and the surgeon said in the consultation I'm normal etc he cant undertand why women have it done and asking me why I wanted it done.. and said always felt self conscious and had one ex-boyfriend who was nasty about them calling them 'beef curtains' put me down alot about them (theres always the thing where some immature men think they're caused by having loads of sex when theyr not isnt there).. and do feel self conscious in a bikini like feel like maybe theres more of a bulge than should be but dont know if im paranoid but luckily they dont cause me pain etc but do feel like i try to 'tuck them in' lol and are always self conscious although try not to be
i could re-book it for £250 resceduling fee otherwise il just lose my money, cant even afford that though!! unless i borrow it im a student as well :(
what should i do?? I was so sure I wanted it done but am now so confused,
my mom put all kinds of stuff into my head about i might not like the way it looks after, it might not look better, I could be in constant pain or lose sensation.. i am upset at her in a way because i researched it alot and looked at alot of pictures and all her thoughts were just her ideas she hadnt researched it herself if you know what i mean she was just talking about her fears.. but its my body isnt it!
any advice would be greatly appreciated thanks I really dont know whats for the best anymore :S are you ladies who have had it pleased with results?

well, you have to consider whether the operation is necessary to you physically and mentally. i had the operation recently (i'm younger than you are btw!) and when i wen't for the consult the doctor said it was for medical reasons and was therefore happy to go ahead with it without question. so if you have doubts, then go with those instincts. because it's a huge thing to do and if it's only because a silly sexually inexperienced guy once made a stupid comment then i definitely wouldn't be doing this. good luck in making your decision, but that's my advice. if it was me, i wouldn't have done this just "because"... but because it was such a serious issue for me mentally and physically (uncomfortable etc) it was necessary and has already made me feel so much better, so for anyone in my situation i would say go ahead! but your not, so i can't really say!

Here is my advice. I recently had a labiaplasty done as well and for me it was the best thing I ever did. I am also only your age and it was something I had been thinking about for 6 years. In regards to ur mother, I think she only wants whats best for you. With that being said, No body understands what it is like unless they have this problem. I personally think that 1 cm is also normal and that your stupid ex bf doesnt understand female anatomy. For me it was a decision based soley on my self esteem. I am still currently in the healing process right now, alittle under 2 weeks and it already is such a big difference. Not to mention that it really is a simple procedure. I was on pain killers for 3 days, meds for 7. The surgery was an hour and I was off my feet for 3 days.. lazing around the house for 6. Now being the second week in im back to work walking around for 6 hours straight with no discomfort or issues. If u decide to go through with it, make sure you are doing it for you. If you really feel self conscious about wearing a swim suit or being naked then I say do it. Let me know if I can help with anything else.

I had Labioplasty four years ago by Dr Matlock and have been in pain ever since. Instead of just reducing the size of my labia minora (inner lips) he decided during the proceedure to laser out the area in the mons pubis region. I woke from the operation to find a gaping 3inch wide gap in my mons pubis area, I was horrified! After about two weeks, the gap closed up, but what that resulted in was bringing my pelvic floor muscles closer together.

Now, bearing in mind I was 24 when I had this done, had no children and had firm pelvic floor muscles, I did not need to have this done and did not request it. My right pelvic floor muscle is constantly sore and often spasms and the pain extends to my groin and buttock area, in the crease of the buttock fold. Underneath, does not close up very well, so there is constant tension.

If he had performed the labial reduction and this only, then I would have been fine as the labia themselves have healed well. I am so angry that he took it apon himself to do something extra and in doing so, left me in permanent discomfort. Sitting for more than an hour causes swelling undeneath and it can sometimes be very painful.

I am a writer researching in these surgeries and talking to women confidentially about their experiences. I am just doing preliminary research at this point. I do not need to reveal your name to anyone, just interested in talking to people with good and bad experiences, and those thinking of doing it. Please email me at catelton@verizon.net thanks!

thanks for getting back to me ladies :D is so good to get advice from girls who have had it done..
amber that sounds awful so sorry to hear about what happened to you :( that is really wrong to do something you have not asked for. Did you get your money back?
berlyn glad your happy having had it done sounds like your healing really well and amyblue glad your pleased with your results good to hear ladies who are glad they have had it done.. dont think anyone would actually miss their labia think most girls are pleased with labia reduction results in general arent they?
also yes your right about the ex-boyfriend he was just a bully in general and anything i was insecure about he would pick on.. i honestly dont think protuding lips are actually a turn off for guys and some prefer them that way i hear..but others prefer small ones, your right you have to do it for the right reasons, for yourself and if they cause you pain that is a different situation as well i agree.. i think thats what my mom scared me about cos of all the nerve endings down there that it could cause me pain and thats what freaked me out as im doing it for the appearance factor (but also pyschological as im insecure about them) that i could end up in some kind of chronic pain when i didnt have a problem with pain to start with.. but i totally trust my surgeon and i just dont think that would happen at all i think labiaplasty is pretty safe isnt it.. he was going to do wedge technique which he said would look natural and if i do decide to have it done I still want him to do it . which technique did you ladies have? the wedge or the trim?
i am just so mad at myself for listening to my mom because i just try not to take her advice in gerneral (lol) because she doesent understand things from my point of view..i know shes doing whats best in her mind shes very into natural things and not into her appearance she doesent even wear makeup or shave etc.. and it is rediculous as well because she actually needs surgery to have an ovarian cyst removed.. and shes not having the operation!! even though shes in discomfort.. shes got some pretty warped ideas at times :S lol i wasnt going to tell her I was having it done because i knew she'd disagree and she only found out days before.. she keeps going on about unnecesary surgery and i need a head transplant instead she just doesent understand and calling me stupid and vain which idont think is fair and she was sending me texts on the day saying things like 'your labia are normal and normal labia are a beautiful thing' which really didnt help..i just wish I hadnt told her i would have def gone ahead if it wasnt for her
i have found out now i have got 6 months to rebook it so at least i have got time to think it through.. looking back i should have gone ahead i know i should have just dont it after getting that far so stupid :S also did you ladies have it done under local or general? I said i wanted local as I was nervous about being put to sleep. On the day the anethetist said he wanted to put me under a general though but i stuck to saying i wanted a local but once i got in theatre and saw all the instruments and everything think if i do have it done will go for a general think..
just one last question does it feel really different down there? do you experience numbness at first then it goes away? does it feel really different when your wearing clothes and does it feel different when your with a guy like physically say during sex and does it make you say more confident with a guy etc?
thanks again ladies so nice to hear other experiences and opinions

I had a general aneathestic and I believe the procedure would have been successful if it had just been a labial reduction instead of the surgeon messing about with my perfectly normal pelvic floor muscles. As a reult of the pain, I avoid sex most of the time now, which is ironic as I actually thought this procedure would give me the confidence to feel less self conscious when in the bedroom thus giving me a more active sex life!

I had the trim and apart from being in pain with the pelvic floor problem, the result is very neat and looks good.

Although I have had a bad experience, I believe your operation will be successful if your surgeon has the correct credentials and he just performs the labiaplasty and nothing else. Make sure you are adament to the surgeon, that you do not want him to do anything else. Labial reductions are generaly very successful with a surgeon who does what you ask for. I've heard Dr Alter in LA is very good. All the best with it x

With regards to getting my money back, no not yet! The surgeon has offered further surgery but as you can imagine, I am dubious!

in reply to your questions, yes it feels incredibly different down there. after the first day i felt different already, and even though i was incredibly swollen, i was so relieved to see the change. it took about a week until the main swelling went down, i'm now about two and a half weeks post op and it's completely normal- just a little bit of hardness on the side of the labia which i expect to go in the next few days. i didn't experience any "numbness"...not really sure what you mean by that? i had to lie down the first 4 days and just ice ice ice! it was a little bit painful but basic pain meds will help. yes, it feels different wearing clothes, esp underwear! finally i can wear nice underwear i have always wanted to and i am much more comfortable.
and finally, yes, it does feel completely different when your with a guy. i've been seeing someone for about a month, i never let him touch me down there but now that all the swelling is gone i let him without any embarassment. haven't had sex though as you need to wait at least 4 weeks or so, depending on how fast you heal. but yes, confidence-wise, i couldn't be happier. i feel completely normal now where as before i was incredibly shy and it would destory any chance of a relationship.

after hearing you talk about it more i think you really need to get it done, if you've been thinking about it for years and if it's really affecting you mentally then just do it. the sooner you get it done, the sooner you can move on with your life. i've already moved on with mine, and it's hardly been long at all! so so so so unbelievable glad that i've had this operation. it's one of the most positive things i've done, honestly, because it now means i can be happy and not self conscious or uncomfortable and just enjoy being young!! :) good luck girl!

I had the wedge method done. The surgeon used LA and the worst part about the surgery was truly just the freezing. After that everything was a piece of cake. I could feel pulling and cutting motions but there was absolutely no pain. I liked LA because it gave me a chance to talk further with my plastic surgeon. I am in the health field so I liked to know exactly what he was doing etc etc.. Now being 2 weeks post off I feel great. I havent worn jeans yet but for the most part there is very little discomfort anymore. I already love the results and know that they will still shrink up more as the stiches fall out. I went with the non- porn star look if you know what i mean. I got them reduced so that they were just tiny bit shorter than my majora so that it still looks natural and that everything isnt top heavy. Let me know if you have any more questions.

thanks ladies.. oh just the numbness that was one of the side effects I had to sign for that i understood as a possible side effect to the surgery i was like aahh numbness dont want to loose all feeling down there lol.. but that isnt going to happen because no-one has complained about 'numbness' i was like 'eh?' as well.
again.. sounds like you are both really happy with results so that is good

I actually posted here a few weeks back about my reduction. It looked like it had a huge hematoma....solid black on my right side, however it turned out to be a really bad bruise and has deminished some. I'm not sure what method my ob/gyn used, however I can tell you this about my recovery time and results. My left labia is neat and straight and so forth, the right side is nice about half way down then it's gone  and at the bottom is a pea size piece of skin....he has assured me that this will "smooth out" over time....I just hope that he's right. The skin down here is a bit rough, but I'm hopeful that it will soften up over time. The recovery for me was terrible, but I also had a hysterectomy at the same time....I couldnt wear panties for about 2 weeks!! I'm currently a little over 3 weeks out and have no discomfort there at all. Good luck!

hi. i haven't been in this forum for 1,5 years and today, i don't know why...- and now i read you need advice or, better, experiences- so here we go :)
i had labiaplasty in august 2008. i didn't know much about the surgeon, had to go 3 hours by train.. whatever. the surgeon seemed trustworthy though, i was scared, but i wanted it so bad. i had been wanting this for years, so i just closed my eyes and went through it. i had the trimming method and local anaesthesia. i didn't feel anything, i just heard the terrible sound. but when i was back on the train, i thought i'd have to die. i swear, i've never felt such pain before (i fell on the floor and cried- in public.). i somehow got home, into bed, everything was full of blood, smelling of disinfectants, i couldn't even move.. and the weird thing was that the plain was completely gone 24 hours later. everything was swollen, but felt quite good. i didn't dare to take a look for 5 days. when i did, i wished i wouldn't have done it. it looked like.. well, not like anything you'd expect to be down there. but that was just the beginning, after 2 weeks, everything started looking really weird, each side of a different size, places, where i could'nt find any labia at all, a weird huge hood over my clit and stuff like that. i thought, nothing to worry about, it's just the swelling- then, along came the notches, and the holes.. one of these things was huge, it became kind of black, pus-filled and most of all horribly painful. nobody knew i had this done, i had to go to work and meet with friends, it was.. not fun.
this thing didn't heal, went to the surgeon by train again, had local anaesthesia, he stitched the thing up, i went home, cried in the train, again 12 hours of really terrible pain (nonstop crying, uncontrollable urge to eat painkillers, crying in the pharmacy while begging them to give me stronger painkillers..). then again nothing, then again the hole- but i thought, i will never ever again let anything be done to me that causes me such horrible pain, i just won't go back to that surgeon. and two weeks later, the thing healed, and everything looked weird (really weird) but didn't hurt. i thought "maybe the swelling will go down blablabla.."- well, it did, but everything looked even worse then. i seem to have a tendency to get a lot of thick ugly scars, and combined with this infection, now a part of my left labia is just gone, on the other side i have a wing of scars (lower half) and a shrivelled hood (upper half). i used to be very depressed, thought i could never have sex again, thought about borrowing money for reconstruvtive surgery (which is very expensive), and then i met a guy. i was ashamed, refuse to sleep with him, one day i did it anyway and- it didn't matter. to your question, if it feels different down there- it does!!! sex is fun, i found out :) i am totally crippled, my vagina looks like anything but a vagina (it looks so scary i- no joking- blindfold people who for some reason get to see it) and you know what's really weird about it? i don't regret the surgery. i like the new feeling, i hate the new look- but i hated the older look too, so what? i think that if you are really unhappy with the way your labia are now, you need to do something, and you will. best thing would be, you meet a guy who's as great as the one who keeps telling me i "really don't look scary"- so you start to like what you have or, at least, stop complaining about it. i had sex with 4 guys since the surgery, and no one was shocked, turned off or whatever.
what i'm trying to tell you is that you think about the way your labia look- but noone else does.. hey, even the guys who got in touch with my meatsalad (how i like calling it) didn't get turned off!! and that guy, that used to say stupid things about you, was just the wrong guy. (i know how very stupid that sounds.)
but i also know that if you want it really bad, you're gonna have it done. i completely understand that. but please, get any information you can about this before. if you find a doctor who seems to be better but more expensive, wait until you have the money. if you're not 100% sure you want it, just don't do it. there are so many things that can go wrong, and you should be sure that you've done everything that's possible to avoid these things.
